  • Toward an Understanding of Canada’s International Identity

Paul Gecelovsky, Robert W Murray•ARTICLE•The American Review of Canadian…•2019

This article examines the construction of Canada’s postwar international identity and how that identity continues to influence Canadian foreign policy, especially with the United States. Furthermore, the article illustrates how changes in Canadian policy necessitated by the Trump Administration may impact Canada’s international identity in the future. The article argues Canadian policy makers have consistently constructed an international identit…

  • Protecting Human Rights in the 21st Century

Aidan Hehir, Robert W Murray•BOOK•Protecting Human Rights in the…•2017

This book contributes to current debates on the protection of human rights in the 21st century. With the global economic collapse, the rise of the BRICS, the post-intervention chaos in Libya, the migration crisis in Europe, and the regional conflagration sparked by the conflict in Syria, the need to protect human rights has arguably never been greater. In light of the precipitous decline in global respect for human rights and the eruption or escal…

  • Jimmy Carter and the Sale of the Awacs to Iran in 1977

    Stephen Mcglinchey, Robert W Murray•ARTICLE•Diplomacy and Statecraft•2017•References: 1

It appeared that as 1977 dawned, the political climate in the United States might render multi-billion dollar arms sales into unstable regions a thing of the past. Jimmy Carter triumphed in the presidential election of November 1976 on a popular platform of arms control and the introduction of human rights considerations into American foreign policy. His transition from that idealistic candidate to the president who agreed to sell Iran a fleet of…

  • Seeking Order in Anarchy

Robert W Murray, Frances Kofi Abiew et al.•BOOK•Seeking Order in Anarchy•2016

Seeking Order in Anarchy offers insights into both the theoretical foundations and the real-world outcomes of multilateralism in world affairs. Recognizing that Tom Keating's theories, though rooted in Canadian foreign policy, have a broader application in international relations, Robert W. Murray has assembled an array of interpretations of multilateralism and case studies examining its practical effects. Drawing from the insights of fourteen no…

  • Hermann Paul's 'Principles of Language History' Revisited

DAVID FERTIG, Paul J Hopper et al.•BOOK•Hermann Paul's 'Principles of…•2015

Hermann Paul's Prinzipien der Sprachgeschichte served as the most important codification and development of Neogrammarian thought for more than four decades. Four well-known linguists have translated specially selected chapters of the Prinzipien into English and provide their reflections on Hermann Paul's contribution on a range of topics.

  • Intervention in the Emerging Multipolar System

    Robert W Murray, Aidan Hehir•ARTICLE•Journal of Intervention and…•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 24

With the rise of China and Russia, the international system is poised to shift from unipolarity to multipolarity. This article argues that this structural reconfiguration will have—and is having—a profound effect on the future efficacy of the responsibility to protect (R2P). The rise of R2P, we argue, must be situated in the context of the end of the Cold War and the ‘unipolar moment’ this heralded. The efficacy of R2P is predicated on the assump…

  • From Middle Power to Peacebuilder

Robert W Murray, John Mccoy•ARTICLE•The American Review of Canadian…•2010

Traditionally, Canadian foreign policy was committed to maintaining a middle ground between large and minor powers. Canada dedicated itself to ensuring its national security and participated heavily in international institutions to do so. Canadian Forces' participation in the NATO mission in Afghanistan since 2001 may prove that the ideas of middlepowermanship and peacekeeping have been replaced as the dominant Canadian military strategies in fav…

  • Syllable Cut Prosody in Early Middle English

    Robert W Murray•ARTICLE•Language•2000

Previous studies have been largely unsuccessful in investigating Middle English quantity changes in terms of moraic or foot structure. The present study approaches quantity changes as the consequence of the phonologization of a syllable cut prosody (Trubetzkoy's (1939) 'Silbenschnittkorrelation') and provides new evidence for the relevance of syllable cut to the diachronic phonology of English. The evidence is from the author's partial reconstruc…

  • Early Germanic Syllable Structure Revisited

    Robert W Murray•ARTICLE•Diachronica•1991

This paper discusses four approaches to the reconstruction of the early Germanic syllabication of VCRV and VCRV sequences; A) Murray & Vennemann (1983) and Murray (1988), B) Barrack (1989), C) Dresher & Lahiri (1991), and D) Liberman (1990). Approach A develops a two-stage analysis involving Proto-Germanic VC$RV and V$CR$(R)V in accordance with Sievers' Law and subsequent reduction of V$CR$(R)V to VC$RV in the early dialects (with some dialect-sp…

  • The Shortening of Stressed Long Vowels in old English

    Robert W Murray•ARTICLE•Diachronica•1988

Although it is generally assumed that shortening of stressed vowels in Old English occurred in two environments (viz. preceding two consonants in trisyllabic words, e.g., samcucu and preceding three consonants in disyllabic words, e.g., broemblas, godspell ), it is argued in this paper that the weight of the two environments cannot be considered equal in terms of a syllabic phonology since the postulation of syllable structures is required which …

  • Preference Laws and Gradient Change

    Open Access•Robert W Murray•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•1987

This paper has two purposes. The first is to focus attention on the gradient nature of sound change. This characteristic of sound change, although an important one, is often overlooked. King (1969: 122), for example, states: “Phonological changes tend to affect natural classes of sounds ( p, t, k , high vowels, voiced stops) because rules that affect natural classes are simpler than rules that apply only to single segments.” This perspective obsc…

  • Sound Change and Syllable Structure in Germanic Phonology

    Robert W Murray, Theo Vennemann•ARTICLE•Language•1983•Cited by: 16

Two competing theories exist about the Proto-Germanic syllabication of and similar sequences: one proposes that the division was , the other, . Furthermore, three major phonological developments in Germanic groups have never received a satisfactory explanation: consonant gemination in West Germanic, vowel lengthening (with differential constraints) in North Germanic, and glide strengthening in Gothic. This paper proposes a uniform solution for al…
