  • A healthcare-associated outbreak of hepatitis C virus infections attributable to tampering injectable anaesthetic opioids, South Germany, 2017–2018

Open Access•K Schmidt, Stefanie Böhm et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: In October 2018, an outbreak of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in southern Germany was communicated to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). Healthcare-associated transmission during invasive procedures involving a specific anaesthetist at a Bavarian hospital was suspected. The aim was to conduct a retrospective molecular outbreak investigation in order to elucidate the course of the outbreak. Methods: An exposed patient was defined as a person…

  • The Discipline of Steel’: Technical Knowledge in the Coordinative Practices of Steelmaking

    Open Access•K Schmidt•ARTICLE•Computer Supported Cooperative…•2024

This is a study of the cooperative work of making steel in a contemporary steel plant. The study is, first of all, a study of the coordinative practices of a cooperative ensemble of operators controlling a time-critical transformation process, while spatially dispersed at different work stations across the plant, working under quite different and varying local constraints and requirements, with only rudimentary means of ongoing communication. The…

  • Dating and provenance of glass artefacts excavated from the ancient city of Tall Zirā‛a, Jordan

    Open Access•Victoria Kemp, K Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 24

Fourteen glass objects recovered from excavations at the ancient city of Tall Zirā‛a, Jordan, were analysed using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) to determine the period and origin of manufacture. The composition of glasses manufactured in the Late Bronze Age (LBA) and Iron Age are distinctly different, therefore major element analysis can be used to distinguish between the groups relatively easily. The LA‐…

  • Practice and Technology

    K Schmidt•BOOK•Socio-Informatics•2018

The emergence of practice-centered computing (e.g., Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, or CSCW) raises the crucial question: How can we conceptualize the practices into which the prospective technology is to be integrated? How can we, reasonably , say of two observed activities or events that they are, or are not, instances of the same type? These are crucial questions. This chapter therefore attempts to clarify the concepts of “practice” and “…

  • “Practice Theory”

    K Schmidt•BOOK•Socio-Informatics•2018

Areas of research such as Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Information Systems (IS), and Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) are interdisciplinary by virtue of their particular research questions and destined to venture beyond the conceptual and methodological sanctuaries of institutionalized disciplines. Researchers in such areas therefore face a constant temptation to import conceptual innovations or theories that might make it less tax…

  • Computer‐Supported Cooperative Work ( CSCW )

    Open Access•K Schmidt•CHAPTER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2016

Computer‐supported cooperative work (CSCW) is an interdisciplinary research field devoted to understanding cooperative work practices with the aim of contributing, both conceptually and technically, to the development of collaborative computing, that is, computing technologies that facilitate, mediate, or regulate workers' interdependent activities. The disciplinary span of CSCW as an interdisciplinary field is exceptional in that it bridges from…

  • Cooperative Epistemic Work in Medical Practice: An Analysis of Physicians’ Clinical Notes

    Open Access•Jørgen P Bansler, Erling C Havn et al.•ARTICLE•Computer Supported Cooperative…•2016

We examine an important part of the medical record that has not been studied extensively: physicians’ clinical notes. These notes constitute an explanatory medical narrative that documents the patient’s illness trajectory by combining each physician’s notes into a common text. Although several prior CSCW studies have addressed the role of the medical record in patient care, they have not dealt specifically with the role, structure, and content of…

  • Radiocarbon dating of thin pedogenic carbonate laminae from Holocene archaeological sites

    Open Access•Konstantin Pustovoytov, K Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Radiocarbon dating has been previously suggested to be applicable to pedogenic carbonate. However, until now the validity of radiocarbon dates from pedogenic carbonate remained poorly understood because of the relatively low resolution of chronological controls. In this study we compared the radiocarbon dates (a total of 21) of thin (0.2—0.3 mm in thickness) laminae of pedogenic carbonate coatings on clasts from Holocene archaeological sites in t…

  • Ordering systems: Coordinative Practices in Architectural Design and Planning[31] (Abstract Only)

    Open Access•K Schmidt•ARTICLE•ACM SIGGROUP Bulletin•2003

In their cooperative effort, architects depend critically on elaborate coordinative practices and artifacts. The paper presents, on the basis of an in-depth study of architectural work, an analysis of these practices and artifacts and shows that they are multilaterally interrelated and form complexes of interrelated practices and artifacts which we have dubbed 'ordering systems'. In doing so, the paper outlines a conceptual framework for investig…

This study was undertaken to address the issue of data reporting in the psychiatric sector of New York City Medicaid, the largest publicly financed psychiatric health care delivery system in the nation. Six outpatient psychiatric clinics in general hospitals, four with residency programs, and all 29 free standing psychiatric clinics in New York City were audited as were charts from 120 psychiatrists billing for 10 or more Medicaid patients.
