Bootstrap Inference for Panel Data Quantile Regression
This article develops bootstrap methods for practical statistical inference in panel data quantile regression models with fixed effects. We consider random-weighted bootstrap resampling and formally establish its validity for asymptotic inference. The bootstrap algorithm is simple to implement in practice by using a weighted quantile regression estimation for fixed effects panel data. We provide results under conditions that allow for temporal de…
The Contemporary Islamic Governed State: A Reconceptualization by Joseph Kaminski
Since its 2013 release, Wael Hallaq’s The Impossible State has retained a central position in debates within the field of Islamic political thought. While Joseph Kaminski mostly agrees with Hallaq’s central thesis that an Islamic state is a contradiction in terms (as a modern state is in its very constitution immoral and ergo non-Islamic), he aims in his The Contemporary Islamic Governed State: A Reconceptualization to shift the discussion away f…
Beyond wine: American aphids in French soil and revolutionary uprisings in a glass
This article examines how phylloxera, an aphid from the United States that destroyed most of France’s wine crop in the second half of the nineteenth century, is linked to the current trend of “natural wine” in France. I tell the story of how the aphid’s attack on wine was construed as a veritable attack on Frenchness itself, and how the French recourse to Louis Pasteur and nineteenth-century scientific authorities in an attempt to counter the aph…
Layoff Agency: A Theoretical Framework
The current downsizing literature has neglected the cognitions and behaviors of layoff agents. In this article, layoff agents are defined as employees who assist in the implementation of layoffs in their employing organizations. The article develops a theoretical framework that focuses on the cognitions and perceptions of those individuals. This framework suggests that layoff agents have the potential to experience cognitive dissonance as a resul…
An Empire's New Holy Land: The Byzantine Period
Here we learn of the transformation of a poor step-child into a favored daughter. The archaeology of the Byzantine Period used to be "too late" for those interested in the Biblical periods and "too early" for those scholars specialized in the remains of Islamic civilization. Now that situation has been totally transformed by a wide-ranging burst of archaeological energy involving a broad range of specialists and perspectives. In his detailed summ…

Religion and Politics in Britain
Small incidents and anecdotes often reveal more about political misapprehensions than whole volumes could do. Two such concerning the nature of church-state relations in England stand out in the writer's mind. A few years before the war of 1939-45 an American clergyman who frequently visited England and the continent pointed out to him that the then dictators attached great importance to the utterances of the Archbishop of Canterbury because, kno…

Was Thomas Cromwell a Machiavellian
It is probably true to say that the unique and peculiar course taken by the English Reformation under Henry VIII, in so far as its origin can be traced to any one man, is due to Thomas Cromwell. Not that he was, as we shall endeavour to show, a theorist of church reform, still less a theologian. Nor did he, any more than any other servant of Henry VIII, at any time hold supreme power. Of all English monarchs Henry might perhaps dispute with Charl…
