If the Bays Could Speak Oral History and Noxious Deindustrialization in the Bays of Biskaia (Basque Country, Spain)
The article advocates for oral history as a valuable method for understanding the urban environmental history of the Bays of Bizkaia and Guanabara, focusing on their damaging deindustrialization processes. We highlight examples of how these processes have impacted and continue to impact both human and non-human communities, and the extent to which testimonies from social actors involved particularly environmentalists and residents of these areas …

Rooting Out Injustices from the Top
The article illustrates the reemergence of the Atlantic Forest biome in Morro da Babilônia, a favela in Rio de Janeiro, due to a reforestation project started in the 1980s conducted by institutional actors and the local community. The forest has played an important role in reinvigorating the sense of community, by legitimizing ownership claims that the community has made over the area, and by serving as a mitigation strategy in a context of incre…

A cidade perdida para as águas
The article analyzes the history of the tourist resort Vila Epecuén, Argentina. The village was destroyed by the expansion of the lake after which it was named. The article draws from the environmental history historiography in framing disasters as social-environmental historical processes, and applies concepts of Social Theory of Risk to focus on some elements of this case study

AHR Conversation
Environmental history is no longer new. Neither, of course, is the notion of environmental crisis. But they are bound together. It might be said, in fact, that historians’ interest in the environment as a legitimate and urgent subject for historical study only crystallized as a field when the deteriorating state of the environment became an issue of public concern in the 1970s. Thus, if environmental historians are not solely interested in dramat…
