    Open Access•Benjamin Hanara, Anne‐Marie Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•MAI Journal A New Zealand Journal…•2023

Wairoro is a te reo Māori term for the brain, and it is a concept grounded in Māori origins (Hīroa, n.d.). This paper is based on the lead author’s master’s research, in which he created Te Āheinga Pū Reretahi—a model developed to provide a structural and functional foundation of understanding the wairoro. Māori life expectancy is increasing (Ministry of Health, 2019), and Māori are now also experiencing the complications of wairoro illnesses tha…

  • Christopher Krupa: A feast of flowers review essays

Open Access•G Smith, Steve Striffler et al.•ARTICLE•Focaal•2023•References: 2

A feast of flowers is simultaneously grounded in the reality of place and the practice of face-to-face social relations while at the same time being thoroughly shaped by detailed attention to actual global geopolitical economy—not just vague references to globalization, but a thorough engagement with, in this case, finance capital and the way debt has driven Northern ambitions and generated a specific kind of social world in the Ecuador of the Gl…

    Open Access•Christopher O''Neill, Christopher Allan O'Neill et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2021

In this paper we analyse data gathered through facial recognition tradeshow ethnographies and interviews with members of the biometrics industry, as we consider recent shifts in industry discourse towards promoting the ‘ethical’ use of biometric technology. As the biometrics industry increasingly moves towards a ‘Video Surveillance as a Service’ (VSaaS) model, the study of facial recognition infrastructures is becoming a crucial aspect of the int…

Two green space measures were used: quintiles of residential greenness …

  • Impacts of Federal and State Hazard Mitigation Policies on Local Land Use Policy

Open Access•Philip R Berke, Philip Berke et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•2014•Cited by: 18•References: 6

Despite emergence of federal policy experiments, knowledge about the influence of federal policies on local land use policy is almost nonexistent. We examine the effects of a federal mandate and a federal incentive program on adoption of land use policies in local hazard mitigation plans. Comparative statistics were used to determine adoption rates by federal and state programs, followed by Poisson regressions to explain degree of adoption under …

A significant shift in the form of the political economy since the 1980s is frequently described as a shift from the welfare state to neoliberalism, the latter either referring to new principles of rule or more broadly to include the nature of the economy. The paper argues that it is more fruitful to explore how these changes reflected a shift in the dominance of forms of capital–principally from production to finance. The dominant class blocs in…

Several prominent Black scholars have argued that the predicament of Black intellectuals is inseparable from that of Black communities (C. West, 1994), and that Black psychologists should be at the forefront in developing culturally relevant psychological interventions (J. A. Baldwin, 1989). Yet, for Black psychologists there are a number of challenges to conducting successful interventions in Black communities, including historical abuses of Bla…

    Murray Chapple, M J Chapple et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1998•Cited by: 10•References: 15

Gay Community Attachment has proved a significant predictor of successful behavior change among gay-identifying men in response to HIV/AIDS. Related work at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, indicated that attachment to gay community is not a simple issue; rather, complex issues of sexual identity formation, the constraints of social inequality and localized sexual cultures inhibit the process of attachment and, therefore, successful HIV p…

Detailed studies of how the poor ‘make out’ in Third World cities have only recently emerged. Casual work must be seen within the context of the worker's relationship to large‐scale capitalism. It must also be understood in terms of the relationships which exist among such labourers themselves. This paper presents material on the nature of these latter kinds of linkages both within the city and between city and country. It is suggested that the c…

    G Smith, Gavin A Smith•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•1979•Cited by: 11•References: 1

In an attempt to uncover the complexity of socio-economic differentiation, detailed evidence is presented of the changing production relations among the Huasicanchinos of Central Peru over a period of ninety years. It is argued that the process of differentiation can only be understood within the context of a quite specific system of production. An examination of the specificity of the relations of production in a particular period then reveals t…
