The Anonymous Lima Census of 1860
In 1860, during the waning years of the Ramón Castilla regime and midway through an economically robust era in Peru thanks to the guano industry, a new census of the capital city of Lima was undertaken. The empadronadores (census takers) approached the task systematically, enumerating the population according to existing administrative districts — and not according to church parishes, as had earlier censuses. As they moved methodically along, the…
Suffragio e rappresentanza nel Perú dell'800

The role of the Cortes of Cádiz of 1810 – 14 in this revolutionary break remains less well known. The Cortes is said to have fostered a legislative, federalist tradition in some places and to have implanted a strongly executive, centralist pattern in others. In Peru, late to commit to independence, convention has it …

Racial Conflict and Identity Crisis in Wartime Peru
This article subjects the historiography and evidence of the massacre of Chinese immigrants in the Cañete valley by Afro-Peruvian peasants, led by women during the War of the Pacific, to critical analysis in light of recent discussions of the nexus of race, culture and nation. It validates the motives of the peasants who carried out the massacre by examining the event as an aspect of racial and cultural identity formation. The study highlights th…

Las crisis económicas en la historia del Perú
Cotton Planters, The State, and Rural Labor Policy
In the Treaty of Ancón ending the War of the Pacific, the government of Peru signed away two provinces on the south coast and much of the country's future guano income. The settlement stripped Peru's treasury bare and exposed the narrow, extractive and agricultural base of the country's economy. A few years later the same Peruvian government, led by the hero of the Chilean war General Andrés Cáceres, signed the Grace Contract whereby the foreign …
