  • Peirce’s Universal Categories in the S 3 symmetry group: An analysis of the basic color terms

    Open Access•John S Robertson, John Robertson•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2025•References: 23

In their landmark 1969 study, Berlin and Kay challenged the longstanding assumption that each language had its own distinct color terminology. Instead, they posited that a core set of eleven basic color terms (or a subset thereof) are consistently recognized across languages globally. Although these basic color terms have largely endured over time, the underlying reason for this specific set of terms has remained elusive. This paper proposes an e…

  • From Valency to Aspect in the Ch'olan-Tzeltalan Family of Mayan

John S Robertson, John Robertson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This paper traces the evolution of the Common Mayan derivational suffixes *-V-ng and *-V-j into their descendant forms in the Ch’olan-Tzeltalan languages. Specifically, the paper outlines a remarkable but markedly consistent shift from a transitivizing, derivational morpheme to an aspectual, inflectional suffix, whose most far-reaching fate is a negative future marker in Ch’orti’. It is only by firmly focusing on the systems of grammatical relati…

  • A Peircean analysis of the American-Spanish clitic pronoun system

    Open Access•John S Robertson, John Robertson et al.•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 15

  • From Symbol to Icon: The Evolution of the Pronominal System from Common Mayan to Modern Yucatecan

    John S Robertson, John Robertson•ARTICLE•Language•1983•Cited by: 1

A drastic restructuring of the Common Mayan system of pronouns resulted in the Modern Yucatecan pronominal system. This restructuring involved, first of all, a paradigmatic regularization of new, formerly non-existent grammatical categories. The restructuring was internally constrained by the hierarchy of the pronominal system itself. The organizing laws which shaped the Mayan system are (a) the well-known theorem of Huntington 1904 that ‘the num…
