Realpolitik and Conviction in the Conflict between Piedmont and the Papacy During the Risorgimento
The Risorgimento, more than any other phase of Italian history, has captured the imagination of Italian and foreign historians. As a result, practically every aspect of the movement for unification has been studied and restudied to the point where there are a number of journals devoted primarily to the series of events that led to the formation of the Italian Kingdom. There is sufficient evidence that Camillo Benso di Cavour and the Piedmontese p…
The Origins of the Italian Wars of Independence
This title focuses on the "Risorgimento", the movement that led to the unification of Italy as a single kingdom. The Italian Wars of Independence were a sequence of three separate conflicts, taking place in 1848-49, 1859 and 1866. This volume examines the role of the major powers outside Italy in these conflicts, particularly France, Austria, Great Britain and Prussia, and in Italy the Italian states, the Catholic Church and the revolutionaries. …

Pope Pius XII: From the Diplomacy of Impartiality to the Silence of the Holocaust
Over half a century after the Second World War and the Nazi genocide of the Jews, controversy continues to swirl about the person and policies of Pius XII (pope, 1939–58), especially his silence during the Holocaust. The contentious debate has created tension between Catholics and Jews as well as divisions within Jewish and Catholic circles. Following the trial of Adolf Eichmann in 1961, which exposed the terrible consequences of the Shoah or Hol…
Jews in Italy under Fascist and Nazi Rule, 1922–1945
The Jews of Italy under Fascist and Nazi Rule, 1922–1945 brings to light the Italian-Jewish experience from the start of Mussolini's prime ministership through the end of the Second World War. Challenging the myth of Italian benevolence during the Fascist period, the authors investigate the treatment of Jews by Italians during the Holocaust, and the native versus foreign roots of Italian Fascist anti-Semitism. Each essay in this volume illustrate…

Pope Pius XI's "Encyclical" Humani Generis Unitas Against Racism and Anti-Semitism and the "Silence" of Pope Pius XII
In June 1938, the eighty-one-year-old Achille Ratti, who had served as Pope Pius XI since 1922, exasperated by the exaggerated nationalism and racism of Nazi Germany, commissioned an encyclical condemning these moral evils. Quickly drawn up by three Jesuit priests, and translated into Latin by another, it was presented to Vladi mir Ledochowski, the General of their Order, at the end of September 1938.1 Pius XI died the evening of 9-10 February 19…

The Italian Tariff and the Conflict Between Agriculture and Industry: The Commercial Policy of Liberal Italy, 1860-1922
Liberal Italy, 1860-1922, has never stimulated the same interest as theRisorgimentoera, which spawned the unitary state, or the Fascist experiment, which destroyed it. Admittedly a number of works have dealt with the liberal period, but these have been all too few and very general in scope. Little, for example, has been written in English about Italian economic growth during these years and even less is known about the commercial policy of the un…
