  • Anticolonial Eruptions: Racial Hubris and the Cunning of Resistance

    Open Access•George Ciccariello-Maher, Geo Maher•BOOK•Anticolonial Eruptions•2022

This incisive study reveals the fundamental, paradoxical weakness of colonialism and the enduring power of anticolonial resistance. Resistance is everywhere, but everywhere a surprise, especially when the agents of struggle are the colonized, the enslaved, the wretched of the earth. Anticolonial revolts and slave rebellions have often been described by those in power as “eruptions”—volcanic shocks to a system that does not, cannot, see them comin…

Recent years have witnessed a renaissance of radical planning in both theory and practice, but often with a persistent disconnect between the two. This article sets out from Harney and Moten's concept of fugitive planning, adjusting it to speak to the still-colonial reality of the global South, before turning to overlooked experiments taking place in Venezuela's communes. I argue that while grassroots planning in Venezuela mirrors all of the inhe…

Glen Coulthard’s Red Skin, White Masks makes two decisive interventions. First, it shifts our lens from the capital relation to the colonial relation, disarticulating the process of primitive accumulation to emphasise its component parts: dispossession and proletarianisation. To do so is to both liberate the concept from its European origins by centring those contexts in which dispossession is not followed by proletarianisation, and to pose the p…

When Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez died in March 2013, he left behind an unfulfilled dream that was never his alone: that of the "communal state." Amid the complicated maneuvering of the post-Chávez era, this aspiration-which would see the expansion and unification of nascent communal councils, alongside a proliferation of other directly democratic political and productive organs-has pressed forward. This article situates this communal state a…

The "good-left-versus-bad-left" framework disseminated by Jorge Castañeda, among others, obscures the underlying similarities that cut across all leftist regimes in Latin America while drastically oversimplifying the relationship between the so-called bad left and its "good" counterpart. A shift of focus from heads of state to social movements reveals both that the question of social movements and the state transcends such binaries and that it is…

This forum brings together six leading intellectuals from different revolutionary traditions and introduces their reflections on class-struggle, the state, imperialism, counter-power, revolutionary parties, community and communes, workplaces, economy, politics, society, culture, race, g…

    George Ciccariello-Maher, George Ciccariello‐maher•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 2

This paper finds the unifying thread of Frantz Fanon's revolutionary decolonial philosophy in what I call "symbolic decolonial violence," the violent self-assertion and public appearance of colonized and racialized non-beings which creates the necessary groundwork for their entry into being. By applying this concept to contemporary political discourse and identity dynamics in Venezuela, while maintaining an insistently "parallax view," we are abl…

  • A Critique of Du Boisian Reason: Kanye West and the Fruitfulness of Double-Consciousness

    Open Access•George Ciccariello-Maher, George Ciccariello‐maher•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•2009

This article seeks to disentangle a number of outstanding controversies regarding the radical potential of W.E.B. Du Bois's seminal notion of double-consciousness. The author concludes that the early Du Bois—of the 1897 “Strivings”—idealistically conflates double-consciousness with the racist veil, thereby erroneously negating the materiality of the latter. This error persists only briefly, and Du Bois's transformation is already palpable by the …

We are told it is, at best, a continuation of the corrupt, bureaucratic status quo or, at worst, a personalistic consolidation of state power in the hands of a single individual at the expense of those "checks and balances" traditionally associated with western liberal democracies. George Ciccariello-Maher, George Ciccariello‐maher et al.•ARTICLE•Radical Philosophy Review•2006•Cited by: 1

The existentialist emphasis on the situation-and the concomitant imperative for intellectual totalization-would lead Sartre to a more sophisticated and radical understanding of his own situation as a European intellectual. This development was largely driven by Fanon, who would push…
