  • Serge Romoff – témoin inconnu

    Open Access•John Flower•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2016•References: 1

John Flower, Martin Hurcombe•ARTICLE•Journal of War and Culture Studies•2015

  • A continuing preoccupation with the Occupation

    Open Access•John Flower•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 1

In addition to a number of commemorative and traditional events and a steady stream of new publications, references and allusions to the period of the Occupation appear to have increased over the last few years. One basic reason, sometimes supported by evidence, is that after seventy years there is a danger that those years and their traumatic events will gradually be forgotten or remembered incorrectly. It may also be, however, that they are bei…

  • Ecological engineering on the Sichuan frontier: Socialism as development policy, local practice, and contested ideology1

    Open Access•John Flower•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2009

China's Western Development Policy redefines the Sichuan frontier as backward economic hinterland, and as ecological buffer zone for the coast. State planners see the 'farmland to forest' plan and hydropower development as achieving socialist modernisation through ecological engineering. Local people like the reforestation plan that maintains subsistence on the land, but they protest land expropriation that accompanies dam construction. In negoti…

  • An Armchair dispute: Franois Mauriac, Jean-Louis Vaudoyer, the Acadmie franaise and the occupation

John Flower•ARTICLE•Journal of War and Culture Studies•2009•References: 1

This article takes as its focus a specific public dispute in the immediate post-World War II period in France in order to highlight wider ambiguities concerning the role and position of the intellectual during and after the period of the German Occupation. In 1946 the art critic, travel writer and occasional novelist Jean-Louis Vaudoyer applied for election to the Acadmie franaise. His long-standing friend, the prominent Roman Catholic writer Fra…

  • The American Dream — or Nightmare: Views from the French Left, 1945—1965

    Open Access•John Flower•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2009

The number of Americans in France — notably on former military bases and in areas of industrial investment and development — increased dramatically after 1945, and their values and influence gradually permeated all aspects of French life. Reactions from writers and intellectuals were varied. Some were positive; others, especially those clearly on or sympathetic to the Left, were not. This paper charts some of these reactions as they were expresse…

    John Flower•ARTICLE•European Accounting Review•1997

The paper analyses the implications of the EUs proposal to permit large multi-national corporations (global players) to present their consolidated accounts in accordance with the IASs of the IASC. After an analysis of the problems faced by both the EU and the global players, it considers the chances of the EU and the IASC reaching agreement. A major problem is identified as being that the IASC is dominated by the Anglo-American approach to financ…
