  • Can we eliminate the primate pet trade in the United States

Open Access•Marilyn A Norconk, Sylvia Atsali et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2024

International laws and conventions have gone a long way in reducing the number of wild primates entering the United States of America (US) for the pet trade. However, breeding primates for sale to private owners in the United States continues, and individual states present a bewildering array of laws and regulations on the holding of primates as pets. As primatologists we can act to decrease the demand for primate pets by (1) speaking out on the …

Open Access•Anne Savage, Leysthen Díaz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2023

Cotton‐top tamarins ( Saguinus oedipus ) are a critically endangered species found only in Colombia. Their survival is threatened by extensive habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade. Because many people in Colombia have a low level of awareness of cotton‐top tamarins and even less understanding of the impacts that the illegal pet trade has on the species and its long‐term survival, Proyecto Tití has developed a series of programs for child…

  • The impacts of seasonal variation and climate on food utilization in a population of critically endangered cotton‐top tamarins ( Saguinus oedipus ) in Colombia

Open Access•Anne Savage, Charles T Snowdon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2022

To examine how precipitation patterns and climate change impact feeding choices made by a population of critically endangered cotton‐top tamarins ( Saguinus oedipus ), we examined 22 years of feeding data (1999–2020) from 21 groups collected at Parque Natural Regional Bosque Seco El Ceibal Mono Tití in Santa Catalina, Colombia. We describe the diet and examine the role of seasonal rainfall and annual variation in rainfall on diet. Rainfall is hig…

  • Seasonality of reproduction in wild cotton‐top tamarins ( Saguinus oedipus ) in Colombia

    Open Access•Catharine J Wheaton, Katie L Feilen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2022

Seasonal availability of resources can influence the timing and success of reproduction in primates. This study examines the annual pattern of conceptions, mid‐term (13 weeks) and full‐term (26 weeks) pregnancy losses, births, and infant survivorship of the Critically Endangered cotton‐top tamarin ( Saguinus oedipus ) at Proyecto Tití's long‐term field site in Santa Catalina, Colombia. Using 18 years of behavior, physical exam, and fecal steroid …

  • Factors influencing the survival of wild cotton‐top tamarin ( Saguinus oedipus ) infants

Open Access•Anne Savage, Charles T Snowdon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2021

Studies of cooperative breeding species have suggested that helpers are needed for infant survival and that helpers gain skills to successfully raise their own offspring. Studies of callitrichids in managed care and early field studies suggested that group size correlated with infant survival and that helpers needed to learn parental skills to be successful breeders. We present infant survival data from a 20‐year field study of cotton‐top tamarin…

    J Rachel Smith, Blair E Witherington et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 6

To understand both immediate and longer-term effects of a short duration, interpretive wildlife tourism program, we studied responses from participants in a sea turtle watch program. This program comprised an interpretive presentation followed by an opportunity to view a nesting loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). We conducted 37 programs in 2013 and 2014, for 843 participants, of whom 70.5% were able to see a nesting turtle. We measured par…

Open Access•Anne Savage, L Soto et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2009

Cotton‐top tamains ( Saguinus oedipus ) are a critically endangered primate found only in Colombia. Efforts to conserve this species are centered on developing effective management plans that integrate biological information regarding population dynamics and factors that influence their survival. This study documented infants born to wild cotton‐top tamarin females from 1994–2008 at two distinct field sites in northern Colombia. Our studies have …

Open Access•L Miller, Lance J Miller et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2004

Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data were used to classify forested areas within the historic distribution of the endangered cotton‐top tamarin ( Saguinus oedipus ) in Colombia. This species continues to be threatened by habitat destruction, and we observed a 31% decrease of the forested habitat within the tamarins' historic distribution in 1990–2000. It is estimated that since the establishment of some protected areas for cotton‐top tamarins and ot…

    Open Access•Marilyn A Norconk, Olav T Oftedal et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2002

Wild white‐faced sakis ( Pithecia pithecia ) ingest primarily seeds that provide a diet that is lipid‐rich and moderately high in dietary fiber. Although little anatomical information is available on sakis, evidence from other vertebrate seed predators suggests that such a diet is correlated with adaptations in gut morphology or physiology. Milton [1984] reported a 20 hr transit time (TT=transit time or time of first appearance in feces) of a par…
