Worldwide trends in diabetes since 1980: A pooled analysis of 751 population-based studies with 4·4 million participants
BACKGROUND: One of the global targets for non-communicable diseases is to halt, by 2025, the rise in the age-standardised adult prevalence of diabetes at its 2010 levels. We aimed to estimate worldwide trends in diabetes, how likely it is for countries to achieve the global target, and how changes in prevalence, together with population growth and ageing, are affecting the number of adults with diabetes. METHODS: We pooled data from population-ba…
Good Manners, Decorum and the Public Peace Greek Drama and the Censor
This chapter takes about the loss of authorship associated with both literary translation and literary censorship. More specifically, the case of the celebrated post-war German writer Gunter Eich is used to explore how the conventional notion of authorship, or, to use Michel Foucault's term, the 'author-function', is surrendered within the censorship context of the National Socialist radio system. Forsaking original creativity in order to meet th…

Euripides our Contemporary
In this masterful reevaluation of Euripides, Michael Walton recasts the playwright in light of his resonance for today’s translators and directors. Springing from the rehearsal room rather than the page, Walton shows us not only why we are ready for Euripides, but why we so desperately need him.’ Mary Louise Hart, Associate Curator of Antiquities, J. Water, Climate, and Society
Water, for drinking, bathing, sanitation, agri culture, industry, and habitat preservation, is a necessity of life. Among the many ramifi cations of climate change, the form, content, and distribution of the earth's are changing in ways that fundamentally affect society and the environment. Social scientists in growing numbers are turning to problems of climate change and society: from drought, famine, and flooding to rising sea levels and wholes…

The Cambridge Companion to Greek and Roman Theatre
This series of essays by prominent academics and practitioners investigates in detail the history of performance in the classical Greek and Roman world. Beginning with the earliest examples of 'dramatic' presentation in the epic cycles and reaching through to the latter days of the Roman Empire and beyond, this 2007 Companion covers many aspects of these broad presentational societies. Dramatic performances that are text-based form only one part …

Variations emerge in the timing of democratization in these countries. In India, democratization preceded neoliberal reforms, whereas in Mexico democratizati…

Trouble in the Heartland: GIS and Its Critics in the 1990s
If we could bring ourselves to accept the fact that no theory about the nature of Man or Society or Rationality, or anything else, is going to synthesize Nietzsche with Marx or Heidegger with Habermas, we could begin to think of the relation between writers on autonomy and writers on justice as being like the relation between two kinds of tools -as little in need of synthesis as are paintbrushes and crowbars Both are right, but there is no way to…

Crime, migration and social change in north-west England and the Basque country
This paper offers a comparative analysis of the relationships between crime, policing, urbanization and associated social changes in urban settings in north-west England and the Basque Country of northern Spain, paying special attention to the impact of migration. Two seaside resorts, Blackpool and San Sebastian, and two major seaports, Liverpool and Bilbao, are compared over a period of rapid urban growth during the late nineteenth and early twe…
Realising Menander: Get-in at the Getty
What follows is an account of the production of Menander’s The Woman from Samos directed with a professional company at the J Paul Getty Museum in Malibu in the autumn of 1994. The play was part of a doublebill, the second half of which was Plautus’ Casina. As translator of the Menander I served as dramaturg to the production while Richard Beacham undertook the same function for the Plautus.
Sophocles’ Electra: Actors in Space
There is nothing unusual about a theatre director appearing reluctant to discuss a play which that director knows from the page but not from the rehearsal process. For a teacher of classical theatre to be equally diffident is more of a novelty. It is perhaps a tribute to the manner in which both the academic critic and the theatre practitioner have in recent years widened their horizons that it is possible for the two worlds of classical scholars…

Urban Sociology: The Contribution and Limits of Political Economy
This paper departs from reviews of urban sociology that juxtapose competing Marxist and ecological theories, arguing instead that over the last 25 years a venerable social organization paradigm has been superseded by a fertile political economy paradigm that continues to orchestrate current research. The contributions of political economy are reviewed under six headings: historical explanation, comparative studies, socioeconomic processes, spatia…
Reconstructing the Image of an Industrial City
There is increasing competition between cities to attract investment. Older industrial cities have a particularly difficult time. It is in this context that there is an attempt to rewrite the meaning of the industrial city. Constructing a new, more positive picture includes the marketing of a new image, constructing a new environment, and reorienting a city's relatinship with its physical environment. The process involves many actors, from busine…
Theory and Research on Industrialization
Sociological approaches to industrialization are framed by two major theories: social differentiation, based on classical liberalism and Durkheimian sociology, and uneven development, derived from the critical work of Marx and Weber. Although social differentiation continues to influence general treatments of the subject, uneven development has proven more fruitful in research. Important themes in recent research are reviewed by means of a proper…

Community Power and the Retreat from Politics; Full Circle after Twenty Years
This paper traces the development of research on community politics since the classic study of Atlanta by Floyd Hunter in 1953. It is claimed that Hunter's contributions were largely misunderstood because of the theoretical and methodological climate of the 1950'S and that a reappraisal of that work shows it to be more sensitive to real political issues than much of the research that has been conducted in the intervening twenty years. An evaluati…

(2) On the other hand, it may mean that the subject becomes set of in its own right, that is to say, a set of symbolic meanings, laws, principles, strategies of inquiry, and methods of verification. Whether or not these can be turned to man's behalf remains always an open question. Men in a Developing Society: Geographic and Social Mobility in Monterrey, Mexico
Monterrey, Mexico, the locus of the study reviewed here, doesn't fit the stereotype of romantic and colorful Latin American cities depicted in the tour brochures of travel a.gencies. In fact, it isn't likely to be included in tourist itineraries at all except possibly as a rest stop between the Texas border 150 miles to the north and more alluring sites farther south. Its tourist appeal is roughly on a par with that of, say Cleveland, Ohio, or Bi…

Urban Latin America: The Political Condition from Above and Below
Much research on the city in developing societies has focused mainly on one of three areas—planning, demography, or economics—and has emphasized either power elites or the masses, but not both. The published literature on Latin America has reflected these interests and has so far failed to provide a comprehensive view of Latin American urbanization. Urban Latin America is an attempt to integrate research on Latin American social organization with…

Urban Political Movements and Revolutionary Change in the Third World
This article considers two theoretical approaches to the question of effectual political participation in the urban policies of Third World societies; the radical and instrumental perspectives. It is suggested that this formulation improves on the vagaries of earlier evidence. It is generally concluded that important changes can stem from instrumental strategies, although fundamental attacks on urban problems require some form of revo lutionary r…
