  • Tłı̨chǫ nàowoò hoghàseètǫǫ

    Open Access•R L Bourgeois•ARTICLE•AlterNative An International…•2026•References: 13

Collaborative research is rooted in the fundamental principle of recognizing communities as equal research partners. This article draws attention to an important part of this relationship—learning the traditional values of community and emulating these in research—presenting a reflection on the lessons learned during a three-year project to redefine principles of curation according to Tłı̨chǫ traditions for caring for knowledge. Throughout this p…

  • Reconceptualizing Repatriation as the Power to Decide

    Open Access•R L Bourgeois, Kisha Supernant et al.•ARTICLE•Museum Anthropology•2025•References: 30

Repatriation in Canada is highly situational, with relatively few regulations in place to assist Indigenous communities in returning their cultural belongings home, let alone to protect their rights as stewards. This paper provides a public policy analysis of repatriation regulations in Canada, with special attention paid to the situation they present to the public, to recommend areas for change. We juxtapose these findings with Indigenous repatr…

  • Bioarchaeological Analysis of Human Remains from the Destroyed Early Neolithic Cemetery of Moty – Novaia Shamanka (Cis-Baikal)

    Open Access•R L Bourgeois, A W Weber et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Irkutsk State…•2022

Moty – Novaia Shamanka (MNS) is an Early Neolithic (7560–6660 HPD cal BP) destroyed Kitoi cemetery, located on the lower Irkut River in Siberia. In 2014–2015, small rescue excavations were conducted by archaeologists from Irkutsk State University. MNS dates to the period between the two phases of use identified at the nearby Shamanka II Kitoi cemetery (Southwest Baikal). This paper presents the results of a bioarchaeological study of the human sk…

  • Institutional Readiness for Community– University Alliances

    Open Access•R L Bourgeois, Andie D Palmer•ARTICLE•Anthropology in Action•2022

The concept of ‘readiness’ in collaborative research is almost exclusively framed and evaluated with respect to the preparedness of a community. We argue that the concept of readiness should be flipped to consider institutions, and thus ‘institutional readiness’, rather than solely assessing a community’s capacity to engage in research projects. To investigate institutional readiness in Canada, we surveyed publications resulting from projects fun…

  • A four-stage approach to re-associating fragmented and commingled human remains

    Open Access•R L Bourgeois, I Bazalysky et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2021•References: 13

  • Pediatric mandibular osteomyelitis

    Open Access•Angela R Lieverse, Daisuke Kubo et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This paper discusses a probable case of pediatric mandibular osteomyelitis (OM) from the east Hokkaido Okhotsk (5th–13th century AD) site of Moyoro, Japan. The remains of a young child present an unusual mandibular lesion exhibiting two main features: (1) cortical thickening reflecting periosteal new bone formation, and (2) lytic alveolar destruction with associated antemortem tooth loss. The lesion was examined macroscopically, microscopically, …
