Miami Beach: The making of a Jewish resort city
In the postwar decades, Miami Beach became a majority Jewish city partially due to the entrepreneurship first of Jewish hotel owners and then of Jewish builders. As a popular, middle-class vacation resort, it blended elements of big city sophistication with ethnic Jewish tastes. Its southern section housed an exceptional, visible community of elderly, Yiddish-speaking Jews who brought their public culture to its beaches and sidewalks. American Je…

This paper presents a series of reflective observations on the use of outdoor spaces in Melbourne, Australia, during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. With the closure of playgrounds and organized sports, the authors observed three themes emerging: changes in users and uses of parks and reserves; markers of children's activities in public areas; and, children's creation of huts, dens or "cubbies" as evidence of constructive and imaginative pla…
Wonder of Wonders: Rethinking Religion in Manhattan
God in Gotham issues a challenge: if religion can survive, nay thrive, in Sodom by the Sea, then maybe we need to revise our theory of secularization of the modern world. The book's subtitle articulates its subversive claims: "The Miracle of Religion in Modern Manhattan." Its alliterative argument suggests a measure of wonder, one of those features of pre-modern life supposedly banished by secularization and the disenchantment of the world

Although Israeli and American Jews share kinship and history drawn from their Eastern European roots, they have developed divergent cultures from their common origins, often seeming more like distant cousins than close relatives. This book explores why this is so, examining how two communities that constitute eighty p…

Tout d’abord, elle élargit la définition du politique en y incluant l’activité des organisations de femmes juives des classes moyennes engagées pour la paix après la Première Guerre mondiale et pour le développement du contrôle des naissances.
