Just be Human, That's All!”
The article examines Russians’ concepts of migrant integration into Russian society. The research was carried out in two stages: a qualitative phase (2022–2023), which included interviews (N=100) and focus groups (N=40) conducted in five Russian regions (Moscow, the Republic of Bashkortostan, Sverdlovsk Oblast, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), and Yaroslavl Oblast), and a quantitative phase (2024), based on an all-Russian online survey (N=4,968).…
Mechanisms of Formation of Migrant Residential Concentration Areas in the Context of a Postsocialist City
Migrant residential concentration areas have been a significant focus for research, but academic attention has primarily centered on their effects rather than how they form. There is some research considering the discrete factors of such areas’ emergence, but these factors are rarely fused into a comprehensive explanation with a description of specific mechanisms in operation. Even less is known about the formation of migrant residential concentr…
Bazaar-Related Migrant Residential Concentration Areas in Post-Socialist Russian Cities
There are various migrant residential concentration areas (MRCAs) internationally, but two models are most frequently used to describe them: inner-city ethnic neighborhood and ethnoburb, both created in the context of North American cities. The scattered evidence of MRCAs arising adjacent to large bazaars, i.e., marketplaces that emerged in the 1990s in the former Soviet bloc countries demonstrates these areas’ considerable differences from both …
What Role do Soviet Nationalities Play in Regulating the Marital Behavior in Dagestan
The article presents the findings of a study dedicated to the norms of matrimony in contemporary Dagestan and the role of ethnic classification by Soviet nationalities within it. Through the research, 133 in-depth interviews were conducted across different regions of the republic, focusing on marital norms and actual behaviors. It was demonstrated that matrimonial norms are changing, with a predominant shift from the notion that one should marry …
E-namus? Social networking sites and conservative norms of romantic relationships among second-generation migrants in Russia
This article describes the normative system that attempts to regulate online behaviour in the sphere of premarital romantic relationships of the second-generation migrants whose parents came to Russia from societies of the South Caucasus which regulate female behaviour more strictly. Based on a mixed-method study, which included a survey, a series of semi-structured interviews and digital ethnography, we describe the norms as well as the means by…
Features of settlement and integration of migrants in Moscow and the Moscow Region
International studies prove the relationship between migrants settlement patterns and their integration. Russian researchers have studied integration for many years but not migrants settlement patterns. The authors aim at filling this gap and describing different aspects of migrants settlement in Moscow and the Moscow Region as affecting integration. The article presents a classification of migrants settlement patterns on four grounds: tenure, ty…
Formation of Immigrant Neighbourhoods in Sweden
The article describes the pattern of the formation of immigrant neighbourhoods in Sweden based on the neighbourhood of Rinkeby in Stockholm as an example. The research involves an analysis of related published studies and empirical data, which made it possible to analyse the urban history of Stockholm and synthesise the causes, premises and the timeline of Rinkeby’s development, including the Million Homes Programme and the consequences of the st…
Residential Concentrations of Migrants in Russian Cities
This article is based on research of international ethnic-migrants’ residential concentrations in Russian cities. The research is based on the uncertainty as to whether such concentrations exist in Russia; there is scholarship which both supports and refutes this thesis. Stemming from the social-ecology approach of the Chicago School of Sociology, the authors concentrate on locations in three Russian cities where the residential concentration of …
Youth with a Migrant Background
In the context of current demographic situation in Russia, migration is considered one of the most efficient ways of population maintenance if not upsurge. Labour migrants coming to Russia are mostly young people. Moreover, in recent years, the youth who grew up in migrant families — the so called second generation migrants, the 1.5 generation migrants, and migrants of other more fractional categories — are becoming increasingly important. Accord…
