  • Contested future-making in containment: Temporalities, infrastructures and agency

    Open Access•Tabea Scharrer, L Lambert et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Migration Studies•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 34

Containment, as a way of restricting mobilities, ranges from physical infrastructures to diffused control practices in everyday life. Alongside their physical, social, and political dimensions, such restrictions also engender various temporal borders and experiences of time particular to situations of containment. A prolific field of research has identified waiting and hope as strategies for both enforcing and surpassing containment. In response,…

  • Ágnostoi: Greece and the forensic bordering of Fortress Europe

    Open Access•Laakkonen•ARTICLE•Suomen Antropologi Journal of the…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This article explores migrant disappearances and border deaths at the Greek borderlands through the notion of forensic bordering. Based on fieldwork in the Evros region, Athens and its surroundings, and on the island of Lesvos, I argue that disappearance and non-identification in the event of death are effectively border violence by other means. Three forms of symbolic and political post-mortem border violence are then explicated: the act of disa…

  • Introduction to the Book Forum on The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity

Open Access•Laakkonen•ARTICLE•Suomen Antropologi Journal of the…•2023

Anthropology human' other (American things, has as Anthropological 'the been study described, of what Association makes amongst us 2023), 'the science of human beings' (Merriam-Webster Dictionary 2023), and 'the comparative study of common sense' (Herzfeld 2001: x). The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity, by David Graeber and David Wengrow (2021), offers us an important suggestion of what 'being human' means: being creative and curious…

  • Deaths, disappearances, borders: Migrant disappearability as a technology of deterrence

    Open Access•Laakkonen•ARTICLE•Political Geography•2022•Cited by: 10•References: 42

This paper analyses migrant disappearances in connection to EU bordering practices and techniques. Drawing on fieldwork in various localities at Greek borderlands, I argue that death or disappearance, due to drowning, hypothermia, exhaustion, violence, deprivation of medical care, and road accidents, to name but a few examples, has become an integral part of border enforcement in the Global North. To engage analytically with such an instantiation…

  • The Integration Spectacle: Migration, politics, and multiculturalism in a Finnish suburb

    Open Access•Laakkonen, Ville Laakkonen•ARTICLE•Focaal•2021

Migration politics in Finland are centered around “social integration” and “multiculturalism.” While the stated aims of such politics are equality and social mobility, the results are often contradictory, perpetuating the hierarchies and inequalities they propose to overcome. Utilizing Guy Debord’s notion of the “society of the spectacle,” I argue that there is a neoliberal Integration Spectacle that projects the appearance of societal change but…
