  • The Legacies of the Stroessner Dictatorship in Paraguay

    Andrew Nickson•ARTICLE•Current History•2025

Alfredo Stroessner ruled Paraguay for three and a half decades; his dictatorship has continued to overshadow the country since his ouster in 1989, despite its formal democratization. His Colorado Party has retained firm control over the state through clientelistic practices. Civil society remains weak after being subjected to “preventive repression” under the dictatorship. Corruption is widespread, with senior political figures linked to organize…

  • State Capture and Elite Resistance to the Sustainable Development Goals in Paraguay

    Open Access•Andrew Nickson, Peter Lambert•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2025•References: 13

This article examines Paraguay's lack of progress in meeting the UN Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the conceptual framework of state capture. It argues that the current model of economic development, based primarily on soya and meat production, is unsustainable in economic, social, and environmental terms and almost exclusively serves the interests of a small elite. The example of three interrelated SDGs is used to show …

  • Armed opposition to the Stroessner regime in Paraguay: A review article

    Open Access•Andrew Nickson•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2024

This review article addresses the little-known armed opposition to the Stroessner regime in Paraguay (1954–89) that remained virtually unreported during the dictatorship. It is based largely on first-hand accounts and official documents that have only recently become available. The Movimiento 14 de Mayo, led by radicals of the Liberal Party and the Frente Unido de Liberación Nacional, led by the Paraguayan communist party, together mobilized arou…

  • Great Britain and the War of the Triple Alliance: The Lincolnshire Farmers Colonization Scheme to Paraguay and the Fourth Ally Thesis

    Andrew Nickson•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 13

This article challenges the fourth ally thesis, which argues that Great Britain was a crucial actor underpinning the combined forces of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay that defeated Paraguay in the 1864-70 War of the Triple Alliance. To date, the debate has focused on British involvement in the genesis and financing of the allied war effort. This article instead focuses on the postwar behavior of the British government, exploring its attitude to t…

  • Revolutionary Movements in Latin America after the Cold War: The Case of the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo

    Open Access•Andrew Nickson•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This article addresses the debate concerning the reasons for the emergence of revolutionary movements in Latin America in the post-Cold War period. It uses the example of the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo (EPP, Paraguayan People's Army) to question the hypothesis by McClintock that, whereas political factors were the principal cause of such movements during the Cold War, economic factors have dominated since then. After reviewing the structural c…

  • The role of decentralisation in post-conflict reconstruction in Sierra Leone

    Andrew Nickson, Joel Cutting•ARTICLE•Third World Thematics A TWQ Journal•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 20

Sierra Leone is widely cited as a positive example of the contribution that decentralisation can play in post-conflict reconstruction. This article critically examines this viewpoint from a political economy perspective as applied to an understanding of donor-driven institutional reform as well as the nature of hybridity and its impact on the sustainability of decentralisation processes. It examines the devolution of functions, finance, political…

  • The Paraguay Reader: History, Culture, Politics

    Open Access•Peter Lambert, Andrew Nickson•BOOK•Paraguay Reader•2013

Hemmed in by the vast, arid Chaco to the west and, for most of its history, impenetrable jungles to the east, Paraguay has been defined largely by its isolation. Partly as a result, there has been a dearth of serious scholarship or journalism about the country. Going a long way toward redressing this lack of information and analysis, The Paraguay Reader is a lively compilation of testimonies, journalism, scholarship, political tracts, literature,…

At a time when the democratic governance resurgence of the 90s in developing countries is giving way to the disappointment and disillusionment at the retreat of democracy, it is opportune that the relationship between democratic and local governance is being given serious consideration by the International Association of Political Science globally (Diamond 2008).
