  • Capital Cities of Latin America

Open Access•Ernesto Capello, Joshua Savala•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban History•2026

This special section reexamines the study of capital cities in modern Latin America with implications concerning the history of urban planning and urban imaginaries more broadly. The articles explore the dynamics of infrastructure, visual representation and imagination, designing and building university cities, and illegal settlements on closed landfills. The cities in question include Bogotá, Lima, Mexico City, Quito, and Santiago and the time p…

  • The Metamorphosis of the Amazon

    Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2025

I attended an American international school in Quito in the 1980s. Many of my classmates’ parents were employed by Texaco, one of whom chartered a flight for our middle school outing club to visit the company's main oil well at Lago Agrio in the Ecuadorean Amazon Region (RAE). There we spent three days in what Maximilian Fritz Feichtner describes as “a little world apart,” where “a guarded fence separated the several hectares of lush gardens, the…

  • Trans and White Trash

    Open Access•Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 21

In this article, I use queer ethnographic and autoethnographic methods to tell a story of how white trash trans people in the Deep South imagine futures amid a haunted colonial landscape. In conversation with feminist and decolonial theoretical frameworks of haunting and potential history, I show that trauma narratives haunt trans people in Louisiana and that trans trauma narratives are an artifact of settler colonialism. In contrast, I situate s…

  • Tumblr was a trans technology

    Open Access•Oliver L Haimson, Avery Dame-Griff et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2019•Cited by: 25•References: 15

Building from previous researchers’ conceptions of queer technologies, we consider what it means to be a trans technology. This research study draws from interviews with Tumblr transition bloggers (n = 20), along with virtual ethnography, trans theory, and trans technological histories, using Tumblr as a case study to understand how social technologies can meet the needs of trans communities. Tumblr supported trans experiences by enabling users t…

  • Sensing Decolonial Aesthetics in Latin American Arts by Juan G. Ramos

    Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2019

Reviewed by: Sensing Decolonial Aesthetics in Latin American Arts by Juan G. Ramos Ernesto Capello Ramos, Juan G. Sensing Decolonial Aesthetics in Latin American Arts. U of Florida P, 2018. x+255 pgs. This intriguing study is premised on a deceptively simple notion: that much popular art in Latin America’s long 1960s sought to develop a decolonial aesthetics through challenging the rarefied airs of high art by dialoguing with popular forms and au…

  • Capturing the Landscape of New Spain

    Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2019

Rebecca Carte's trim and elegant book presents an in-depth reading of Baltasar Obregón's account of the 1564 Ibarra expedition, whose stated purpose was to “establish mining settlements in the borderlands of New Spain and to suppress indigenous rebellions in the region” (p. 7). Obregón, the son of an encomendero, played the part of a soldier-explorer in the initial expedition. He sent his account to the Council of the Indies 20 years later to cem…

  • Writing across Cultures

    Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2013

It has now been 30 years since Ángel Rama first published his classic Transculturación narrativa en América Latina. In the interim, the Uruguayan critic’s extension of Cuban sociologist Fernando Ortiz’s concept of transculturation into the literary sphere has become seminal in Latin American cultural studies and cultural history. Even college freshman encountering Latin American history for the first time will receive an introduction to the conce…

  • City at the Center of the World

Ernesto Capello•BOOK•City at the Center of the World•2011

  • A son de caja de guerra y voz de pregonero

    Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2011

It has now been 40 years since David Brading famously labeled the Bourbon Reforms a “revolution in government.” This pliable framework has undergirded much subsequent scholarship, being used variously to reify notions of the Bourbon state as a despotic centralizing force that ultimately drove creole independence fervor, to analyze the variable impact of Enlightenment rationality across the empire, and, increasingly, as an incomplete process often…

  • The History of Havana

    Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2008

This concise history of Havana from colonial times to the present is the first book from the Palgrave Essential Histories series dedicated to an urban history rather than a national history. (Previous volumes have focused on Germany, Denmark, Venezuela, and Cuba, among others.) The emphasis on Havana is particularly interesting within this context as the authors tend to conflate Cuba’s general history with that of the capital city, a tendency tha…

  • Construcción de las identidades latinoamericanas

    Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2007

The deceptively simple concept of Latin America as a unified space inevitably breaks down upon closer inspection. This compilation of provocative and intriguing essays seeks to disentangle a number of attempts by nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century intellectuals to define the elusive commonalities of the region. Although it offers few general conclusions, the volume highlights the diverse and complex iterations of latinoamericanismo that devel…

  • The postcolonial city as universal nostalgia

    Ernesto Capello•ARTICLE•City•2006•References: 4

A modern metropolis of nearly two million souls in the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes, Quito has long been perceived as an old, stagnant and nostalgic city. This article attempts to trace the origins of the city’s longing for its past by analysing the continued relevance of the Spanish concept of vecindad in the city’s postcolonial history. It is argued that the city’s olden identity stems from a complex matrix of regional power disputes with root…
