How Adults and Children Search and Recognize Pictures
The eye fixations of 20 young adults and 20 children, aged six, were recorded while they were recognizing or inspecting a series of displays. The test photographs presented three levels of definition for one particular scene: very blurred, blurred, or sharp. Each picture was presented for two 10-second trials. Either the very blurred or the sharp picture was given first to a particular S. The eye tracks were therefore recorded either during attem…
Seven Cognitive Skills in Reading
examine the three stages of reading: matching, coding, and comprehension. Since reading is primarily a visual task, the tests include pictorial processing as well as verbal processing. The seven skills include 1) memory for orientation, 2) coding of temporal sequences to spatial ones, 3) orientation and habituation to novelty, and four tests of comprehension and prediction. The eye movements of the child will be recorded while he is carrying out …

Remembering Advance Cues During Searching
A classification is given of the various ways in which advance information may be displayed to help performance, and a distinction is drawn between two kinds of work. These are tasks in which advance information (1) always remains on view until after action has been taken, and (2) is displayed but must be memorized, because it disappears before action is required. A particular laboratory task of order search has been studied; this has the advanta…
Visual Search for Successive Decisions
When a situation provides information from many different independent sources, characteristic difficulties arise, even when the decisions required are of the simplest possible kind and do not require estimates of probability. This paper considers the effect of the amount of material in the display which must be searched for the correct answer, and also how this display load interacts with the speed at which decisions are required, in a situation …
Local cold acclimatization in man
Increased complexity in organisms narrows the range of body temperature within which effective function is found. The organism responds to this problem by developing both internal and external mechanisms for keeping a steady body temperature independent of the environment. However, there comes a point at which these protective devices break down; the study of the response to arctic conditions involves the study of these three aspects, namely, ext…
