Free Health Care for the Poor: The Philadelphia Dispensary
Scholars have traced the American hospital’s development from last-resort refuge for the poor and dying in the eighteenth century to the principal health care institution for people of all classes by the early twentieth century. With the exception of Charles Rosenberg, how-ever, few have paid much attention to the dispensary, where far more of the urban poor received medical treatment than in hospitals during the same period.1 This study of the P…
Chapter 10. Anti-Semitism, Toleration, and Appreciation: The Changing Relations of Jews and Gentiles in Early America
Charles Peirce's understanding of the four ages and of his own place in the history of human thought
John Deely's Four ages of understanding rightly views Charles Sanders Peirce as one of the key figures in human thought, along with Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, and Locke (not to mention Kant and Hegel). Studying Peirce's own extensive writings on the history of philosophy, in which all of those men figured prominently, reveals that Peirce himself developed roughly the same periodization as Deely, without working it out in such detail. Peirce r…

The American Civil War Did Not Take Place: With apologies to Baudrillard
The term 'Civil War', which is now used most commonly to describe the military events of 1861-1865 in the USA, only gradually became the predominant signifier of the conflict. It represented a compromise between Northerners who had formerly talked of the 'War of the Rebellion' and Southerners who claimed to have fought 'The War for Southern Independence' or 'The War Between the States' (which is still used, mostly in the ex-Confederacy). The term…

Foucault stoned: Reconsidering insanity, and history
The 1982–3 debate in The New York Review of Books between Lawrence Stone and Michel Foucault over whether mental institutions were benign or oppressive provides an excellent window through which to view the most fundamental questions of how history is written. Stone looks upon the past as explainable through complicated connections of cause and effect; Foucault believes these are unknowable and we can only understand the discourses of particular …
The Conflict of Law and Justice in the Icelandic Sagas
The world's longest lasting republic between ancient Rome and modern Switzerland, medieval Iceland (c. 870-1262) centered its national literature, the great family sagas, around the problem of can a republic survive and do justice to its inhabitants. The Conflict of Law and Justice in the Icelandic Sagas takes a semiotic approach to six of the major sagas which depict a nation of free men, abetted by formidable women, testing conflicting legal co…

David Humphreys' "Life of General Washington" with George Washington's "Remarks
In a remarkable feat of historical detective work, Rosemarie Zagarri has assembled manuscripts from three separate archives to reconstruct - and publish for the first time in its full form - the only biography of George Washington authorized by the general himself. Written by his close friend and military aide David Humphreys. It offers a rare, intimate glimpse of Washington's life, from his birth in 1732 until his assumption of the presidency in…

The Social Structure of Revolutionary Boston: Evidence from the Great Fire of 1760
The Social Structure of Revolutionary Boston: Evidence from the Great Fire of 1760 Discussion of the distribution of wealth in eighteenth-century Boston seems to have reached the point of diminishing returns at which deficiencies in the evidence become more important than the underlying reality. Four sorts of records have hitherto been used to document the town's degree of inequality: probate inventories, the tax list of 1771, property transfers,…

Samuel Adams and Shays's Rebellion
AMUEL ADAMS has long been celebrated as a hero in America's struggle for independence. In the late 1760s and early 1770s, when he served as moderator of Boston town meeting and clerk of the House of Representatives, his manoeuvres and manifestoes mobilized the people for resistance and ultimately contributed to the success of the American Revolution. By the 1780s, however, Adams appeared to be no more than an aging, has-been politician. His decli…
