The Statistical Movement in Early Victorian Britain: The Foundations of Empirical Social Research
The author's purpose is to examine the statistical movement, especially in the 1830s and 1840s until its demise in 1852, in order to find out how it organized itself, to assess its achievements and to discover a distinctive philosophy, if it had one. Most, but not all, of the social statisticians of the time are included here and their activities are introduced by a survey of British social statistics from 1660 to 1830.The remainder of the book is…

Fertility trends in Europe since the second world war
Before discussing the movements in fertility in Europe since World War II, it is necessary to consider, both as a background and a yardstick for measurement, the general situation around the mid-1930's. This period has been chosen for several reasons. First, it was at about this time that the crude birth rates and other period indices of fertility in most Western and North-Western countries of Europe reached their lowest points. The decline initi…

Some indicators of differences between urban and rural mortality in England and Wales and Scotland
This note collates the official statistics on expectation of life and attempts to assess the changes in the urban-rural differences since the middle of the nineteenth century. The magnitude and causes of the differences have altered greatly and the capital cities now show expectations of life higher than the national average
The population controversy in eighteenth-century England. Part I. the background
This is the first of a series of papers which will endeavour to survey the development of British demography in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and to discuss the problems involved in studying population movements during that period. In the present paper an account is given of the background of the population controversy of the eighteenth century, with particular reference to the state of knowledge at the time of population movemen…
A note on the under-registration of births in Britain in the nineteenth century
In this note an attempt has been made to estimate the incompleteness of birth registration in Great Britain in the first decades of civil registration. For Scotland, registration appears to have been reasonably complete after 1861. For England and Wales, however, there seems to have been a considerable initial deficiency, with a consistent improvement over time and no sudden change following the 1874 amending Act. The estimates given in this note…

Family planning programmes and action in Western Europe
Neo-Malthusian organisations for spreading birth control propaganda were created in many West European countries in the 1870s and '80s. But the birth control movement proper, with its provision of clinics and other means of supplying advice on contraception, began much later-generally after World War I and largely on a welfare basis, divorced from Malthusianism. Legal and other difficulties impeded progress and conditioned the nature of the movem…

Gregory king's estimate of the population of England and Wales, 1695
This study reviews the validity of King's estimates of the population of England and Wales in 1695, and of its age composition. The estimates are analysed in the light of the available King manuscripts, including a recently discovered manuscript containing King's answers to Harley's queries. The evidence establishes fairly clearly that King made use of hearth-tax material to obtain a distribution of ‘houses’ between London, other towns, and the r…
