This article provides a provisional sketch of the state of arts and humanities scholarship within university settings in the Arab world. Ghazālī and the Perils of Interpretation
In his book, Al-Ghazali and the Ash c arite School, Richard Frank argues that al-Ghazālī was critical of traditional Ash c arite theology and that his own theological views were greatly influenced by philosophical cosmologies and notions of causal determinism. Frank also argues that al-Ghazali chose to conceal his real theological views by manipulating language, and by deliberately using a traditional religious idiom to introduce his own unconven…
Appropriating the Past: Twentieth-Century Reconstruction of Pre-Modern Islamic Thought
This essay examines the writings of the famous twentieth-century salafī, Rashīd Ridā, in which he discussed and reconstructed the views of Shawkānī, one of the leading thinkers of the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-centuries, on the subject of legal analogy (qiyās). Shawkānī had opposed the introduction of new laws through qiyās on the grounds that it arrogates to humans a right to legislate which is reserved to God. Ridā, however, mistake…

The Origins and Objectives of Islamic Revivalist Thought, 1750-1850
A Non-Ptolemaic Lunar Model From Fourteenth-Century Central Asia
As early as the ninth century, Muslim astronomers started refining the Ptolemaic astronomy which, by this time, had been fully adopted as the framework of their research. Already, in the early part of this century, refinements were based on improved observational techniques, and included a variety of phenomena such as the length of the seasons, the solar equation, mean motion parameters, and many others
