Large‐scale proteomics in the first trimester of pregnancy predict psychopathology and temperament in preschool children
BACKGROUND: Understanding the prenatal origins of children's psychopathology is a fundamental goal in developmental and clinical science. Recent research suggests that inflammation during pregnancy can trigger a cascade of fetal programming changes that contribute to vulnerability for the emergence of psychopathology. Most studies, however, have focused on a handful of proinflammatory cytokines and have not explored a range of prenatal biological…
Real world external validation of metabolic gestational age assessment in Kenya
Using data from Ontario Canada, we previously developed machine learning-based algorithms incorporating newborn screening metabolites to estimate gestational age (GA). The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of these algorithms in a population of infants born in Siaya county, Kenya. Cord and heel prick samples were collected from newborns in Kenya and metabolic analysis was carried out by Newborn Screening Ontario in Ottawa, Canada. P…
Greenspace, Air Pollution, Neighborhood Factors, and Preeclampsia in a Population-Based Case-Control Study in California
To investigate preeclampsia etiologies, we examined relationships between greenspace, air pollution, and neighborhood factors. Data were from hospital records and geocoded residences of 77,406 women in San Joaquin Valley, California from 2000 to 2006. Preeclampsia was divided into mild, severe, or superimposed onto pre-existing hypertension. Greenspace within 100 and 500 m residential buffers was estimated from satellite data using normalized dif…

This article re-evaluates the origins of the armistice of November 1918, drawing on German, French and British primary sources and on insights from work by political scientists on war termination. It examines why the German government decided to request a ceasefire and why the US, Britain and France decided to grant one. At first sight these decisions appear paradoxical in the light of the military-political situation at the time. In accounting f…
Halys and Qalys and Dalys, Oh My
Health-adjusted life years (HALYs) are population health measures permitting morbidity and mortality to be simultaneously described within a single number. They are useful for overall estimates of burden of disease, comparisons of the relative impact of specific illnesses and conditions on communities, and in economic analyses. Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) are types of HALYs whose original purpose…

Child-bearing after induced abortion
We reviewed 1791 singleton pregnancies of women with a history of previous induced abortion and compared them with 14,857 pregnancies in mothers with no previous induced abortions. Therapeutic termination of pregnancy was associated with a statistically significant increase in the incidence of low birth weight infants and bleeding in the first trimester of pregnancy. When other variables were examined, no significant differences were found betwee…
Masonry, symbolism and ethics in the life of Sir Robet Moray, FRS
This paper investigates some less well known aspects of the life, work and philosophy of Sir Robert Moray, FRS.These include his involvement with masonry, which derived partly from his professional interest as a military engineer, and partly from his desire as a scientist to investigate the secrets of the 'Egyptian', or ancient, knowledge which masonic groups were thought to possess. His use and interpretation of symbolism, as displayed on his per…
Leather guns and other light artillery in mid-17th century Scotland
Leather guns were a 17th century experiment in gun manufacture that began in Switzerland and was adopted in Scotland. Their advantage was lightness: a relatively thin metal barrel was tightly wound with rope, wire or cord and encased in leather. Twenty-three such guns exist in Scotland, representing six types, and as a whole are distinguished from other European examples by several special features. James Wemyss in Fife was the principal Scottish…
