  • NASSH and the Evolution of Sport History in North America

    Steven A Riess•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport History•2021

This essay examines the evolution of sport history, once a disdained subject among scholars, into a vital and respectable topic of inquiry, focusing on the North American Society for Sport History's (NASSH) fifty-year effort to achieve that status. Until the 1970s, historians neglected sport history, considering it unworthy of their attention because it was a frivolous topic that did not foster valuable knowledge or explain vital historical issue…

  • Bloomer Girls

    Steven A Rie, Steven A Riess•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2018

Debra A. Shattuck has spent three decades studying the participation of girls and women in baseball, producing the most thorough study of women's participation in the sport during the nineteenth century. In her much-awaited study she argues that baseball evolved from a gender-neutral child's game and demonstrates that playing baseball was not exclusively a male activity since girls and women “actively (although not always consciously) resisted th…

    Steven A Riess, Steven Riess•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Horse racing was an elite American sport that dated to the colonial era. It was the nation's most important antebellum spectator sport, but concerns about its aristocratic connotations and ties to gambling, and also the impact of the Depression of 1837, hindered the sport in the North. Thoroughbred racing revived in the North following the Civil War, propelled by elite jockey clubs that operated the most prestigious racetracks. Their success led …

  • The Kentucky Derby

Steven A Rie, A Rie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2013

James C. Nicholson grew up in the horse-racing industry and was born to write the history of the Kentucky Derby, the preeminent American event for three-year-old Thoroughbreds that annually draws more than 150,000 people to Churchill Downs for a two-week festival and the race. The book is based on his dissertation at the University of Kentucky. Nicholson argues that the derby is unique because of its association with the myths and romantic symbol…

    Steven A Riess, Steven Riess•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 1

When I started studying the history of sport in 1970 there were less than a handful of other historians other than physical educators in the field. Sport was widely considered a flippant subject (but not at the University of Chicago). My dissertation and my first book examined the myths and realities of professional baseball during the Progressive Era to evaluate how the sport influenced, and at the same time reflected American society. In an era of extreme specialization among American historians, it is rare for a monograph to have had the major impact of Poverty and Progress . While there have been previous studies of social mobility, American ethnic groups, and urban communities, Thernstrom’s study was pathbreaking in his use of research techniques and interpretation, and it established a major agenda for the “New Social History.” The questions he raised and his success in wr…
