  • Whatever Kind of Pagan the Bearer Might be, The Letter is Valid. A Sketch of Catholicorthodox Relations in the Late-Mediaeval Grand Duchy of Lithuania

    Open Access•C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2013

This article examines relationships between Catholic and Orthodox Christians in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It stresses the robust policies of Catholic and Orthodox prelates and nobles towards one another and especially towards the Unionist Ruthenians, who sought to maintain their liturgical and hierarchical identity while recognising the primacy of the bishop of Rome. By contrast in personal…

  • The Role of Charitable Activity in the Formation of Vilnius Society in the 14th to mid-16th Centuries

    Open Access•C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2012

This article examines the development of charitable activity in the city of Vilnius and elsewhere in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania before the middle of the sixteenth century by studying the foundation of almshouses to care for the poor and destitute and foster the memory and salvation of pious benefactors. Almshouse foundations developed from increasing forms of practical piety within the GDL from the late fifteenth century, following earlier west…

  • Vernacular Translations of Scripture in England and Lithuania before the 17th Century

    Open Access•C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2011

This article gives a general survey of the development of a need among Lithuanian Catholics at the end of the fifteenth century for access to religious literature and especially Scripture in the vernacular (for sake of convenience, in Ruthenian translation). The work of Francis Skorina is examined in this context as a distant forerunner of Chylinski’s first published translation of the Bible into Lithuanian. The development of vernacular translat…

  • The Joyous Entry of Casimir I and IV into Lithuanian and Polish Cities

    Open Access•C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2006

This article uses published and unpublished material to examine the entry of Casimir Jagiellończyk into various towns in Poland and Lithuania. Royal entry ceremonial demonstrated the social contract between the lord and his subjects: his legitimate and accepted position as dominus naturalis, his respect for his subjects’ liberties, and in return his subjects’ loyalty to their prince and acceptance of his legitimacy. There is a general format to e…

    Open Access•C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2006

We Wlodko, lieutenant of Lublin, Piotr Szafraniec, sub-steward of Cracow, Mikołaj castellan of Zawichosc, and Krystyn warden of Kazimierz, make known to all those who examine these presents that on the Thursday within the octave of the Epiphany of the Lord in the year of that same Lord 1386 we came before the most victorious prince, Jogaila, by the Grace of God Supreme Duke of the Lithuanians and Heir to Rus', with a delegation of noblemen, digni…

  • The Jagiellonians and the Stars

    Open Access•C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2002•Cited by: 1

Mediaeval scholars attempted to fit received data and information from empirical observation into a pre-ordained model of the universe. Astrology was, and in many cases still is, a form of applied astronomy held by its adherents to be verifiable by events, that is, history. Drawing connections between celestial coincidences and events known to have happened under such circumstances in the past seemed to offer a possibility for predicting types of…

  • Historiographical Review

    Open Access•C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2001

Since the breakdown of the Soviet Union and Swedish socialism the Baltic region has attracted more attention, although not perhaps as much as it might deserve, than since the 1930s. English-speaking readers have been presented with a magisterial survey of the northern world over a five hundred years' period. However, many of the old stereotypes of war, pestilence, and the rise of Sweden under Gustav Adolphus, the lion of the north, and of Russia …

  • Dynastic Bluff? The Road to Mielnik, 1385–1501

    Open Access•C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•Lithuanian Historical Studies•2001

This article views the act of Union issued at Mielnik in 1501 in the longue durée of Lithuano-Polish relations from 1385/86. It stresses the need to treat the dynastic aims of Jogaila and his son Casimir seriously, regarding the thrones of Lithuania and Poland within the context of developments in family law and inheritance in the Grand Duchy and the Kingdom in the fifteenth century. Textual echoes are noted between a ‘union’ agreement outlined c…

  • A pagan's word

    C Rowell, S C Rowell•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•1992•References: 5

This short paper seeks to illustrate how the last pagan rulers in Europe, the grand dukes of Lithuania conducted their extensive diplomatic relations with their Christian neighbours. The Lithuanians fit into a long tradition of Christian dealings with pagans and show a willingness to adapt their manner of upholding international agreements in accordance with the practices of their partners. It highlights an hitherto ignored note on pagan Lithuani…
