The Gascon Rolls
This contribution seeks to trace the history of a long, drawn-out editorial project and the ways in which it has reflected changing approaches to the study of medieval England’s European continental possessions. Beginning in 1885, the Anglo-French venture to edit and publish the Gascon Rolls experienced a somewhat chequered history until the recent successful conclusion of the project as an online source. Its vicissitudes are recounted. The signi…

The Civilization of Courts and Cities in the North 1200-1500
The relation of the ecclesiastical and secular arms had always been a major theme in medieval European history, but during the later Middle Ages secularization was especially significant. The papacy’s attempt to control and consecrate the secular state had failed. By 1500 the secular power exerted a greater degree of control over the Church in northern Europe than its precursor had done in r 200. In Germany, princely and aristocratic influence wa…
The Princely Court
In this fascinating new book, Malcolm Vale sets out to recapture the splendour of the court culture of western Europe in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Exploring the century or so between the death of St Louis and the rise of Burgundian power in the Low Countries, he illuminates a period in the history of princes and court life previously overshadowed by that of the courts of the dukes of Burgundy. Taking in subjects as diverse as art p…

In the allegorical romance of Le Jouvencel , King Amydas complained to his son-in-law of the ‘slow poison in my stomach which will one day kill me.’ The romancer,—Jean de Bueil, admiral of France and count of Sancerre,—was referring to the presence of the English within France during the last phase of the Hundred Years War.
