Navigating tensions between professionalism and sustainability in early childhood care and education in South Africa
This article extends our recent research on workforce professionalism in the South Africa's Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) sector. We explore how teachers navigate tensions between professional expectations and systemic challenges that impact educational quality and equity. These tensions are compounded by fragmented governance and structural inequalities. ECCE teachers, predominantly Black African women, face systemic barriers rooted …

Rubh’ an Dùnain: A multi‐period maritime landscape on the Isle of Skye, Inner Hebrides, Scotland
A non-intrusive survey of this headland on Scotland's western seaboard reveals evidence of maritime activity from prehistory until the recent past. The siting of an Iron Age dun appears to have exploited a natural creek to bring boats to a secure landing-place. Access was enhanced by a cleared channel, and two docks with adjacent nousts constructed. A stone-revetted canal was later driven to the loch beyond, and quays built on either side of the …

A contemporary review of the alcohol/aggression relationship and the Buss‐Perry Aggression Questionnaire for use in an alcohol dependent population
A contemporary review of the psychometric properties of the Buss‐Perry Aggression Questionnaire was undertaken to assess its suitability for an alcohol dependent population. Three criteria were used to try to achieve this: factor analysis; internal consistency reliability; and test‐retest reliability. Factor analysis revealed that its structure is remarkably consistent in a number of populations. Internal consistency reliability and test‐retest r…

The Adelaar: A Dutch East-Indiaman Wrecked in 1728 off Barra, Outer Hebrides, Scotland
The Adelaar, a Dutch East-Indiaman outward bound from Middleburg to Batavia, was wrecked on Greian Head, Barra, in Scotland's Outer Hebrides in 1728. Although heavily salvaged at the time, and situated in an extremely dynamic location, the wreck demonstrates that exposed sites can retain meaningful levels of archaeological integrity, and historically valid conclusions can be drawn from them. © 2005 The Nautical Archaeology Society

An Iron Bastard Minion Drake Extraordinary by John Browne from the Pinnace Swan (1641-53)
A small iron gun recovered from the wreck of the Caroline warship Swan has been identified as a drake, a lightweight tapered-chamber design dating from the 1620s. It is the only known cast-iron example of such a piece made by John Browne, gunfounder to Charles I, who was the leading figure in its development and manufacture in England. The gun was found together with an associated carriage, port-lid, and case shot appropriate to its calibre. © 20…

De-particularizing the particular: Approaches to the investigation of well-documented post-medieval shipwrecks
Post-medieval shipwrecks are rich repositories of archaeological evidence with closed and closely integrated contexts. Their value is often enhanced by extensive documentary material. Viewed on its own terms, such evidence, though often of great interest, can lead to an over-particularist approach. Set into wider contexts, however, shipwrecks can be regarded as wide-ranging paradigms of the societies to which they belong, and approaches to their …
