Touching the Common
This article considers some of the ‘haptic’ and literally sensual procedures of postconceptual work that might suggest a new way of thinking the politics of the aesthetic today beyond the limitations – by now widely-known and well-theorized – of so-called ‘relational aesthetics’. Focusing on the work of the Mexican Yoshua Okón, in particular his recent Pulpo/Octopus (2011), the article engages a return to the site of political struggles (a return…
Tlatelolco me bautizó”
This essay takes as its starting point the relative lack of a contender to the “novel of ′68” in Mexico. I argue that Jorge Volpi's 2003 El fin de la locura constitutes the final writing of such a novel, to appear some 35 years after the original events of that year. The double “renewal” pursued by this work is explored both as an intended restoration of the literary to a place of social privilege after a period of decline, and also as a conserva…
To Begin Writing
This article reads the works of Mario Bellatin, a writer and artist working in Mexico City, as paradigmatic of new artistic and social forms. It examines a number of spheres of production (performance, pedagogy, novels, the plastic arts) but maintains the centrality of the operation of writing. Bellatin's writing, the article suggests–in a way that is notably distinct from many of contemporaries' resentful attachment to the Spanish American narra…
Resistances of Latin Americanism
Resistances of Latin Americanism Samuel Steinberg John Beverley. 2004. Testimonio: On the Politics of Truth. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press. The journal Dispostio/n has recently made a welcomed reappearance with a special issue dedicated to a trend that assumed and soon lost a certain conceptual dominance (or, at least, ubiquity) within Latin American studies in the nineties. I speak of Latin American subaltern studies, whose search f…

Two Portraits of Sir John of Hartshill
The National Gallery at Melbourne, Australia, purchased in 1922 a fine example of English painted glass of the middle of the fourteenth century. The panel shows the portraits of Sir John of Hardreshull and his wife Margaret, daughter and coheir to Sir James Stafford of Sandon. The figures are all in white glass, of an ivory tint, and the outer narrow margin is also white. The diapered background is of a rich blue colour, the plain border is ruby …
The Sarcophagus of Naro, Sicily
Among the places which Count Roger I conquered during his campaign in Southern Sicily in 1086, Gaufredus Malaterra mentions the Arab town of Narû, the present Naro, in the province of Agrigento. Naro, like nearly all towns in inner Sicily, is dominated by a castle and a church which stand some hundred yards distant from one another on two rocky heights at the top of the mountain on which the town is situated. The church stands, as is shown by rec…
A Portrait of Beatrix of Falkenburg
Among the many treasures of art preserved by Sir William Burrell at Hutton Castle, Berwick-on-Tweed, is a stained-glass window which is likely to arouse the interest of English historians and historians of art. It represents Beatrix of Falkenburg, wife of Richard, Earl of Cornwall, King of the Romans and brother of King Henry III; and it is a very valuable example of English art of the thirteenth century
