Artist, poet, playwright, novelist, designer, and entrepreneur, Mina Loy (1882-1966) moved in the circles of Futurism, Dada, and Surrealism and migrated among major metropolitan centers of avant-garde and modernist activity, including Paris, Florence, Rome, New York, London, and Berlin, from the 1910s to the 1950s. Yasna Bozhkova’s Between Worlds: Mina Loy’s Aesthetic Itineraries approaches Mina Loy as “one of the most interstitial figures in mod…

  • Visionary Architects: Barbara Guest, Frederick Kiesler, and the Surrealist Poetics of the Galaxy

    Open Access•S P Rosenbaum, Susan Rosenbaum•ARTICLE•Humanities•2022

In this essay I demonstrate how Barbara Guest’s experiments in visual poetry were influenced by Frederick Kiesler’s architectural designs: both artists, inspired by Surrealist poetics, sought to build visionary structures that took shape on the page but moved beyond it. Following Kiesler’s 1965 death, Guest published a poem in 1968 inspired by Kiesler’s “Galaxy” structures, titled “Homage”, and included a shortened version in Durer in the Window …

With critical lenses supplied by Deaf epistemology, religious blasphemy, and Pierre Bourdieu’s cultural field, these studies recontextualize and …

  • Preface to a Literary History of the Bloomsbury Group

    S P Rosenbaum•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1981

HE NEED FOR a literary history of the Bloomsbury Group is not self-evident. The very existence of the Group has been questioned, almost since its inception and sometimes by the members themselves. But with the deluge of biographies, autobiographies, letters, and diaries that has been going on for some twenty years and has yet to stop, it now seems that if the Group did not exist it would have to be invented. Bloomsbury's existence has been called…
