Characteristics Associated with Sex After Periods Of Abstinence Among Sexually Experienced Young Women
To provide targeted and timely sexual health counseling, clinicians may want to ask adolescents not only whether they are sexually active but also when they last had sex
The Indiana Chronic Disease Management Program′s Impact on Medicaid Claims: A Longitudinal, Statewide Evaluation

OBJECTIVES: : To evaluate the effect of the Indiana Chronic Disease Management Program (ICDMP) on the longitudinal changes in Medicaid claims statewide. RESEARCH DESIGN: : Phased implementation of a chronic disease management program in 3 regions of the state. Fourteen repeate…

Indiana Chronic Disease Management Program Risk Stratification Analysis
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the ability of risk stratification models derived from administrative data to classify groups of patients for enrollment in a tailored chronic disease management program. SUBJECTS: This study included 19,548 Medicaid patients with chronic heart failure or diabetes in the Indiana Medicaid data warehouse during 2001 and 2002. MEASURES: To predict costs (total claims paid) in FY 2002, we consider…
Syphilis Testing in Association With Gonorrhea/Chlamydia Testing During a Syphilis Outbreak
We used an electronic medical records system retrospectively to evaluate how frequently, in a public hospital and its clinics, combined gonorrhea/chlamydia tests were accompanied by a syphilis test before and during a syphilis outbreak. Among 70 330 gonorrhea/chlamydia tests (1996–2000), the proportion with a syphilis test increased from 13% (preoutbreak) to 50% (intervention period) for men and from 6% to 13% for nonpregnant women. The increased…
Condom Use as a Function of Time in New and Established Adolescent Sexual Relationships
Objectives. This study sought to describe condom use over time in new and established adolescent relationships. Methods. The outcome variable was time (in days) until first unprotected coital event. Analyses involved comparisons of Kaplan–Meier survival curves and Cox proportional hazards models. Results. Survival functions for the 2 relationship groups were significantly different. However, by 21 days the curves had converged: 43% of new and 41%…
Partner‐specific relationship characteristics and condom use among young people with sexually transmitted diseases
This study describes associations of partner‐specific relationship characteristics with consistent condom use among 297 young people (ages 13–24) with sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Relationship‐specific variables were relationship quality, reasons for sex, relationship duration, duration of sexual relationship, coital frequency, “established” versus “new” sexual partner, cohabitation, children, sexual coercion, and drug or alcohol use asso…
Revision Rates After Knee Replacement in the United States
OBJECTIVES: Each year approximately 100,000 Medicare patients undergo knee replacement surgery. Patients, referring physicians, and surgeons must consider a variety of factors when deciding if knee replacement is indicated. One factor in this decision process is the likelihood of revision knee replacement after the initial surgery. This study determined the chance that a revision knee replacement will occur and which factors were associated with …
Dental Fluorosis and Caries Prevalence in Children Residing in Communities with Different Levels of Fluoride in the Water
The ingestion of water containing 1 ppm or less fluoride during the time of tooth development may result in dental fluorosis, albeit in its milder forms. However, in these times of numerous products containing fluoride being available, children ingesting water containing 1 ppm fluoride continue to derive caries protection compared to children ingesting water with negligible amounts of fluoride. Thus, the potential for developing a relatively mino…

Postdischarge Care and Readmissions
A multifaceted intervention was hypothesized to increase postdischarge ambulatory contacts and to reduce nonelective readmissions. Patients (N = 1,001) discharged from the general medicine service were stratified by risk for nonelective readmission and randomized to the control or intervention group. Intervention patients received phone calls from nurses, mailings of appointment reminders and lists of early warning signs, and prompt rescheduling …
The Cost-effectiveness of Intensive Postdischarge Care: A Randomized Trial
This study tested the hypothesis that increasing the intensity of outpatient care for patients discharged from the hospital could lower their subsequent inpatient and total health-care costs. At discharge, 1,001 patients were stratified by risk of readmission (low, medium, or high) and randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. Discharge information (summaries, medications, and postdischarge needs) was provided to outpatient nurses w…
Counseling medical and dental patients about cigarette smoking: The impact of nicotine gum and chart reminders
To investigate methods for improving and expanding the counseling of smokers by physicians and dentists, we assigned 112 physicians and 50 dentists (in separate studies) to one of the following conditions: the control or advice-only group received a one-hour lecture on the consequences and management of smoking and a booklet detailing a four-step protocol for counseling patients about smoking; three other groups received, in addition, either, pro…
Increasing Prescribed Office Visits: A Controlled Trial in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus
Patients who fail to show for scheduled visits or who fail to contact their provider when warning symptoms occur pose important problems for the primary care physician. A group of interventions was examined to determine the effectiveness in increasing the number of prescribed office visits in patients with diabetes mellitus. This group of interventions included mailed packets with information on how to use the clinic, providers' names and phone n…
Prevalence and Correlates of the Type a Behavior Pattern in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis
The Type A behavior pattern was noted less frequently in a group of 60 patients with rheumatoid arthritis than was expected based on standardized norms for the Jenkins Activity Survey. Patients manifesting Type A behavior with respect to factors of Speed and Impatience and Job Involvement tended to have better physical status than those exhibiting Type B behavior. These aspects of the Type A behavior pattern may be associated with good physical h…
