  • William the Conqueror's March to London in 1066

    G J Turner•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•1912

I T has been generally agreed that William the Conqueror, on approaching London after the battle of Senlac, made no attempt to cross the Thames, but marched along its right bank and found a crossing at Wallingford nearly fifty miles above the city. A suggestion has recently boon proposed that his movements were governed by military considerations, as ' a long sweep about a hostile city was favourite strategy of William's '} In this essay I am chi…

  • The Minority of Henry III.—Part II

    Open Access•G J Turner, Grace-Marie Turner•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Royal…•1907

Three years ago I read a paper to this Society on the subject of the minority of Henry III. Part of that paper was published in a somewhat enlarged form in the ‘Transactions’ of the Society for 1904, and part was reserved for publication in a subsequent volume. To-night I shall read some introductory words which I was then obliged to omit They are concerned partly with the authorities for the period, and partly with the state of political feeling…

  • The Minority of Henry III

    Open Access•G J Turner, Turner Graham•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Royal…•1904

Although the history of the reign of Henry III. has often been written, I venture to think that some generalisations about it have been too readily accepted and that this is especially the case with respect to the king's minority. Too much importance has been attached to the monastic chronicles, and too little to the testimony of official records. In the first part of this paper I narrate briefly a few of the chief incidents of the regency of the…

  • The Sheriff's Farm

    Open Access•G J Turner, Grace-Marie Turner•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Royal…•1898

A Sheriff's farm was the sum of money which he was required to pay annually at the Exchequer for his bailiwick. In virtue of this payment he was allowed to receive for his own use certain revenues paid to him in his official capacity. He was not entitled to all revenues so paid to him, but only to specific revenues; these he was said to farm. But he was not obliged to pay the whole of his farm directly to the king. In every year he would receive …
