  • Templar General Chapters

    Open Access•Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Traditio•2025

This paper seeks to examine various aspects of Templar general chapters and also to draw some comparisons with the general chapters of other orders. Origins, frequency, length, and location are discussed, together with the size and composition of the chapter. The functions of chapters, including legislation, appointments to leading offices, alienation of property, and justice, are considered. The question of capitular seals is also investigated. …

  • Non-Templar witnesses in the Templar Trial

    Open Access•Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Ordines Militares Colloquia…•2024

Although non-Templars were questioned about various matters during the Templar trial, including the location of brothers and their property, they were most frequently asked about alleged Templar wrongdoing. It was, however, only in areas where Templars denied the charges or where few Templars were arrested that many outsiders were interrogated. Varying measures were adopted to secure their assistance. Eye-witnesses often spoke favourably of the T…

  • The Papacy and the Financing of the Spanish Reconquest in the Thirteenth Century

    Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Viator•2023

This article seeks not only to examine the measures taken by the papacy to provide financial support for the Spanish Reconquest, but also to assess how much importance it attached to war in the Peninsula in comparison with other conflicts that had papal support. The Spanish clergy were expected to contribute to papal taxes and subsidies for the Holy Land, the Latin Empire, and other purposes. Popes were, however, on several occasions prepared to …

  • The magistracy of Berenguer de Cardona, Aragonese provincial master of the Temple, 1291–1307

    Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2022•References: 3

Towards the end of the thirteenth century an Aragonese provincial master’s duties were of an administrative, rather than a military, nature. There was no precise demarcation of responsibilities between the master and heads of convents, but the provincial master Berenguer de Cardona was much involved in the administration of Templar estates, seeking to dispose of unprofitable properties, creating an extensive lordship in northern Valencia, dealing…

  • Early Templar Administration in Provence and North-Eastern Spain

    Open Access•Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Medievalista online•2021

Information about the creation of Templar convents and a province in Provence, north-eastern Spain and neighbouring territories before 1150 is limited. Some types of evidence, however, suggest the establishment of convents. These include references to the construction of buildings to house Templars; the introduction of the term magister to describe some local officials; lists of brothers resident in a particular place; the appearance of the offic…

  • Aspects of Templar Conventual Life in Western Europe, circa 1250-1307

    Alan Forey, Alan J Forey•ARTICLE•Revue Mabillon•2020

The houses of the Templars normally had a hall, dormitory and chapel, but not a chapter house or an infirmary. Most housed a few brothers, and many of these were engaged for the most part in domestic or agricultural work. The use of private rooms for sleeping was growing. The spirituality of individuals is hard to assess, but religious observances were largely maintained. For various reasons not all attended weekly chapters. Most evidence about c…

  • Templar provincial chapters in the later thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries

    Open Access•Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Ordines Militares Colloquia…•2018

By the later thirteenth century Templar provincial chapters in the West were being held annually, usually in the spring or early summer. In the French province they were always convened in Paris, but in some other provinces meetings took place in various convents. Those who attended were mostly heads of convents, and it seems that those present usually totalled some forty to fifty brothers: in many provinces the majority were sergeants. Provincia…

  • A proposal for the reform of the Hospital in the Late Thirteenth Century

    Open Access•Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Ordines Militares Colloquia…•2017

Although opposition to masters was voiced in several military orders in the thirteenth century, the criticism expressed in the Hospital in 1295 was unusual in that an attempt was made to alter the order’s structure of government. It was claimed that masters had not observed the rule and customs of the order, and the Hospital was therefore to be placed under the control of seven diffinitors, of whom the master was to be one, and who were to hold o…

  • Procedures for the Settlement of Disputes between Military Orders in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries

    Open Access•Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Ordines Militares Colloquia…•2015

Military orders sought not only to prevent disputes with similar foundations by agreeing regulations on subjects such as transfers between orders but also to establish long-term procedures for the settlement by arbitration of disputes, particularly about property rights. These usually provided for the naming of a certain number of arbiters drawn from the orders themselves.Yet in practice these arrangements for arbitration were commonly ignored, a…

The Hospital of St John is thought to have been in various respects in a rather more healthy condition than the order of the Temple in the late thirteenth century, and comparisons and contrasts between the two orders have recently been made, often to the detriment of the Templars. This view is examined with reference to recruiting, the role of sergeants, ignorance among brothers, provincial administration, central government, and roles after the …

He felt that, in view of the advances made in research on the Order since his Vie et mort de l'ordre du Temple was published twenty years ago, a new book was needed, even if it is closely modelled on the earlier one, rather than a further edition of the first survey. New histories of the Templars have admittedly not been altogether lacking in the last fe…

    Alan Forey•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2002•Cited by: 2

Descriptions of the activities of military orders only rarely included any reference to the conversion of Muslims, and in practice the orders did not seek to impose Christianity by force. They were at times also reluctant to allow voluntary conversions among their Muslim vassals and slaves, although claims that they sought to prevent Muslims in neighbouring Islamic territories from accepting Christianity are questionable. The explanation of the a…

After their trial, Templars in England were in 1311 dispatched singly to religious houses, where they were to observe their vows and do penance. Although there was some opposition from both Templars and monasteries, the payment of pensions assigned to Templars caused longer-lasting problems: the crown and later the Hospitallers frequently defaulted in making payment from former Templar revenues. In 1318 John XXII instructed that Templars should e…

It has commonly been maintained that those who went on the Second Crusade were betrayed or at least deceived by the Syrian Franks at the siege of Damascus in 1148. Yet, although the Christian camp was moved during the siege to an unsuitable site, it may be doubted whether this is to be explained by treachery, the reports of which are open to various objections. It may be argued that the transfer was occasioned by the deteriorating situation in wh…

    Open Access•A J Forey, Alan Forey•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1982

The leading studies of the Hospital of St John in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries have presented somewhat differing accounts of the power structure at the centre of the Order. Delaville Le Roulx in his brief analysis of government provides an essentially static picture and maintains that although in theory the plenitude of power rested with the chapter general, which delegated executive authority to the master, in practice the latter's power…
