  • Native Americans in the Civil War: Three Experiences

    This chapter examines the experiences of Native Americans in the Civil War. Some 20,000 Native Americans served in the Civil War on one side or the other. Some went to war as individuals for the same reasons as some common white folk, enticed by recruitment bounties or hired as a substitute by some wealthy person, or pressured by loyalty to some powerful protector or patron.
