The Origins and Development of Classical Hinduism
The Origins and Development of Classical Hinduism
The late A.L. Basham was one of the world's foremost authorities on ancient Indian culture and religion. Modeled on his monumental work The Wonder That Was India, this account of the origins and development of classical Hinduism represents a lifetime of reflection on the subject, and offers an intriguing introduction to one of the richest of all Asian traditions.Synthesizing Basham's great knowledge of the art, architecture, literature, and relig…

The Succession of the Line of Kaniṣka
As we have pointed out elsewhere, the question of the date of the era of Kaniska still seems far from a final solution, and it will probably remain so until further evidence comes to light. Equally doubtful is the problem of the succession of the kings of Kaniṣka's dynasty, for their relationships are by no means settled and there are several kindred questions which are still unanswered. The evidence on the subject is extremely tenuous, and, as w…

The Date of the End of the Reign of Kumära Gupta I and the Succession After His Death
The Girnar Inscription of Skanda Gupta,1 read in conjunction with the Bhitari Inscription of the same king,2 shows that Skanda Gupta came to the throne while the Gupta Empire was in great difficulties as a result of the invasion of the Hunas and the mysterious Pusyamitras. On pacifying the country Skanda gave much thought to the choice of governors for the outlying provinces, and decided to appoint one Parnadatta as governor of Surastra

Recent Work on the Indus Civilization
Among a bewildering mass of archaeological reports and learned papers the small book of the late Dr. Ernest Mackay, The Indus Civilization, published in 1935, has provided an excellent concise outline of the subject. It has now been reissued under a significantly amended title, with revisions and additions by the author's widow. New maps and illustrations have also been added.Since 1935 further researches have considerably modified our earlier vi…
Harsa of Kashmir and the Iconoclast Ascetics
Kalhana′s Rājataranginī contains an important account of an event probably unique in the history of Hindu India. The dissolute king Harsa or Harsadeva (A.D. 1089-1101), when in financial straits, was advised by his evil counsellor Lostadhara to restore his fortunes by looting the temples and melting down the images of the gods. After some persuasion he agreed to taking this course, and pursued a policy of iconoclasm so vigorously that, among the …

A New Study of the Śaka-Kuṣāṇa Period
Among the most difficult unsolved problems of Indian history and archaeology are the chronology of the dynasties generally called Śaka and Kuṣāṇa and the dating of the art of Gandhāra. Writing of the former in 1919, Dr. Vincent Smith declared: 'definite progress towards a conclusive solution of the problem based upon solid facts has been made.... and ... the uncertainty as to the chronology has been reduced to a period of forty years in round num…
