  • L’architecture gothique dans les îles Britanniques

    Open Access•Roger Stalley•ARTICLE•Perspective•2007

This paper examines the collapse of the crossing tower at Lincoln Cathedral, an event that took place in the 1230s and one that has not been explored in detail before. The absence of previous studies is curious, given the architectural importance of the cathedral and the interest attached to structural failures. Although the circumstances that led to the collapse are far from clear, it is argued that a contributing factor was the lightweight pier…

    Open Access•Roger Stalley•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article reassesses the design of the nave of St Davids Cathedral in the light of modern scholarship, arguing that the cathedral has been a victim of an overly historicist approach to architectural writing. New documentary evidence is presented, including information about the existence of two churches on the site. Anomalies in the west bay are defined and some of the explanations offered by Lovegrove (1922, 1926) are rejected. Following an a…

  • V. The Medieval Sculpture of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin

    Open Access•Roger Stalley•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1979

The invasion of Ireland by the Anglo-Norman armies in 1169–70 is not normally regarded as an event of any importance in the history of English art. Such an attitude is understandable, for Irish works in the Middle Ages rarely made any substantial contribution to artistic developments elsewhere. But the military activities of 1169–70 did have important results from an English point of view, since they greatly extended the ‘geography’ of English ar…
