A Markov Chain Model for Mental Health Interventions
Poor mental health affects nearly one billion people worldwide and can end in suicide if not treated. Unfortunately, stigma and a lack of mental healthcare providers are barriers to receiving needed care. We developed a Markov chain model to determine whether decreasing stigma or increasing available resources improves mental health outcomes. We mapped potential steps in the mental health care continuum with two discrete outcomes: getting better …
Is Language a Factor in the Perception of Foreign Accent Syndrome
Neurogenic foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is diagnosed when listeners perceive speech associated with motor speech impairments as foreign rather than disordered. Speakers with foreign accent syndrome typically have aphasia. It remains unclear how far language changes might contribute to the perception of foreign accent syndrome independent of accent. Judges with and without training in language analysis rated orthographic transcriptions of speech …

An Autosegmental-Metrical Investigation of Intonation in People with Parkinson's Disease
This study investigates the intonation in the read speech of two males with hypokinetic dysarthria resulting from idiopathic Parkinson's disease and compares them with two age-matched male controls. The investigation was carried out within the autosegmental-metrical framework (AM), which analyzes intonational contours as a sequence of abstract, discrete pitch targets (high or low tones) and permits analysis on two levels: the intonational phonolo…
Postwar Serbian Nationalism and the Limits of Invention
Serbian nationalism has rarely been the subject of theoretical analysis. For the most part, recent work on Serbian history implicitly supports the ‘modernist’ position among nationalism theorists, which holds that nationalism is a modern phenomenon that serves the interests of the politically powerful. In this article, the Serbian nationalist movement of the 1980s will be examined in light of the major theoretical approaches to nationalism (moder…

Mihiz in the Sixties
Between 1981 and 1991, Serbian intellectual and political life were energized by a movement to overcome the legacies of the Tito regime. Tito himself had died in 1980, but his political heirs, insecure and unimaginative, had proclaimed that even though Tito was gone, his image would continue to guide and bind the peoples of Yugoslavia: “After Tito—Tito!” In Belgrade, the anti-Titoist movement began as a struggle for free expression. As Borislav M…

The Children of Cain
Today Dobrica Ćosić, the Serbian novelist, is most often exploited as a handy caricature, his name a code word for the ill effects of Serbian intellectuals' involvement in politics. But as code word, Ćosić loses meaning and the nature of his influence is obscured. While he clearly did something to inspire the growth and quality of Serbian nationalism in the 19808, establishing the nature of his inspiration is difficult, given the layers of mythol…
Beyond Journalism
Journalists," wrote one historian regarding reporters in Yugoslavia, "are most effective when they stay faithful to their craft."1 Journalistic efforts to analyze and describe the wars in former Yugoslavia have not always followed that advice. Journalists had begun to abandon the region as public interest dwindled prior to the war in Kosovo, but the Kosovo conflict and the civilian massacres that have characterized the war have rekindled that int…
