Muslim immigrants and perceived discrimination in Europe: A comparative analysis
US Social scientists of the 1950s in the Mezzogiorno and Ernesto de Martino: Two divergent approaches to history and development
In the 1950s, several US scholars came to Italy to study the Mezzogiorno, that is the Southern region. Their aim was to suggest how to solve the ‘backwardness’ of a Cold War disputed region, split into two political and opposing camps. The relationship between those scholars and the Italian intelligentsia was difficult. Surprisingly, they never found common ground with the best-known Italian anthropologist of that time, Ernesto de Martino, whose …
Ecology and space in the Covid-19 epidemic diffusion: A multifactorial analysis of Italy’s provinces
This study aimed to identify the ecological and spatial correlates of the COVID-19 secondary transmission mechanisms. The dataset comprised cross-province daily COVID-19 cases recorded in Italy from 25 February to 26 May 2020. Several physical and socio-economic variables and a broad set of spatial matrices were employed to explain epidemic spreading. First, the serial transmission interval was identified through autoregressive models. Second, th…
Economic Reformism vs Sociocultural Conservativism: Parties’ Programmes, Voters’ Attitudes and Territorial Features in the UK General Elections 2019
This study explored the determinants of the massive vote shift that characterised the UK’s 2019 elections. To do so, this study firstly investigated opinions expressed by pro-Labour social groups about the hot issues of the political campaign; secondly, it conducted a cross-constituency analysis on the 2019 vote. The present findings reveal that the issues emphasised by the Conservative manifesto tallied with the opinions of traditional left-wing…

W.W. Rostow and His Contribution to Development Studies: A Note
Following the death of W.W. Rostow, the present paper investigates his contribution to development theories. After a reconstruction of the international political and economic background of his studies of the 1950s and 1960s, the paper contrasts Rostow’ approach with those of the main theories of that time, from the socialist model of development to the dependency theory. Then, the validity of Rostow’s ideas is examined in the light of the change…

De‐institutionalisation, Psychiatric Treatment and Mentally Disordered Offenders in Italy: Some Critical Considerations
The control of mental illness has undergone a drastic change over the last decades, as a consequence of new theoretical approaches. The result has been a process of de‐institutionalisation of psychiatric services in all the Western countries. This change has been often extolled, but its dynamics present aspects that still remain obscure; and some studies have suggested that de‐institutionalisation may produce unforeseen negative side effects, par…

Family, marriage and divorce in a Hausa community: A Sociological Model
The aim of this article is to show how a 'traditional' society may produce a household system in which the structural tensions are no less intense than in the Western world. Muslim Hausa society (in northern Nigeria) has one of the highest rates of divorce (and remarriage) in the world. An explanation is sought here in terms of the economic and organisational requirements of a subsistence farming system that is always potentially short of labour.…
