A commentary on Newbrough's Third Position
Newbrough's Third Position is discussed in terms of its utility as a framework within which to understand and resolve interpersonal differences, seemingly irresolvable diametric differences, and conflictual situations. The framework's essential elements and its application is illustrated through the presentation of a series of fictitious scenarios that open with conflict and close with a resolution in which the interested parties feel heard and s…

Action research on leadership for community development in West Africa and North America: A joining of liberation theology and community psychology
Our purpose is to enhance the field's understanding of the nature of community leadership, the psychological sense of community, and the spiritual dimensions of community life. We describe an action research community development project conducted in a low‐income Catholic parish in Lagos, Nigeria, in Western Africa. After describing the community development process that resulted in the establishment of 40 small/street basic communities (SBCs), w…
Toward a community‐oriented action research framework for spirituality: Community psychological and theological perspectives
Spirituality, once an old and honorable religious term for the “exploration into what is involved in becoming human” (McFague, 1997, p. 10), is ubiquitous in contemporary culture, albeit highly diverse and ambiguous in its usage. In our active interchange involving two community psychologists and a theologian—carried on in the spirit of Lewinian action research and pastoral theology's method of congregational studies— we have returned to that ear…
The Gray-Hobbs vision
Susan Gray and Nicholas Hobbs were visionaries. The John F. Kennedy Center is the most significant and enduring testimony of their vision, emerging as it did from their continuation of the distinguished tradition of psychology at George Peabody College. Established in 1914, Peabody College's Department of Psychology awarded the first doctorate in psychology in the South. Major figures in the history of the field, such as E. K. Strong and Joseph P…

Toward community: A third position
This essay addresses the insufficiency of modern science as the solution to the problems of human life. It is a critique of community theory and a constructivist proposal for a synthesis of the individuality and collectivity solutions to the Paradox of the One and the Many—designated as the Third Position. The Third Position is necessary for the postmodern period for there is a need to incorporate the goal of Equality (or Justice) into a paradigm…

Community psychology in the postmodern world
The postmodern era is a period of transition from the 300-year-long modern period. Community psychology as a field is faced with the challenge of what to do in the period of transition. This article sets the historical context of the challenge in the modern period with the traditional laboratory science model as the solution to a concern about social uncertainty and chaos. An alternative, human science, developed in the late 19th century, is the …

The stress-buffering role of social support and personal competence among the rural married
This study examines the possible stress-buffering properties of personal competence and social support with regard to depressive symptoms. The hypothesis examined was that individuals lacking both internal and external resources would manifest higher levels of symptoms as a result of increasing number of life events than would individuals possessing such resources. Further, variation by gender was considered. Data on depressive symptoms (CES-D Sc…

A transactional model applied to therapy
This paper develops the assumptions that underlie a transactional approach to psychotherapy by utilizing Bentley's ideas about the environed organism. It emphasizes that not only is interpersonal interaction significant therapeutically but the situational aspect of persons and behavior (living, working, neighborhood, and community circumstances) contribute to the process of client change and growth.
Policy values in community mental health program planning
An analysis of values underlying the CMHC program was advanced. Three scenarios were offered to describe how federal policy might be formulated: (1) stop, (2) continue as originally planned, (3) continue based on local demand. Six value questions were posed to indicate which scenario would support that value position. Scenario 3 seemed clearly supportive of four value questions.
Master's level training in community psychology: Four examples
Four programs for master's level training in community psychology at George Peabody College for Teachers are described to exemplify four different roles in community psychology: (a) direct service provider, (b) systems consultant, (c) agency administrator, and (d) liaison worker.
The schools, the locality, and citizens' needs
society. This has been part of the industrialization and modernization of the country. This paper will argue that bureaucracy and modernization have yielded a system of schools not integral to local community functioning and not meeting many needs of the local citizenry. If the schools are to become integral to local communities, we must formulate deliberate policies to produce this effect. Bureaucratization, per se, is not a negative force. As a…
Liaison services in the community context
Liaison services are described in terms of the organizational home needed at the community level and an organizational change for the boards of service agencies is suggested. Four general principles of liaison work are listed, and a life-cycle approach to individual and family needs was suggested.
