  • Efficiency of the Add-A-Pair Method in Learning Paired-Associates

    Open Access•Wilton L Gibson, Lewis R Lieberman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1972

An unrecognized implication of Rock's (1957) analysis of paired-associate learning is that a most efficient way of learning a list is to begin with a single pair and add a pair each trial until the whole list is learned. A list of 17 difficult, single-lettered, 2-digit number pairs was used. 18 control Ss received all pairs for 9 trials, while 18 experimental Ss used the add-a-pair method. By the last trial and 153 exposures each, experimental Ss…

  • Attitudes toward the Mentally ILL, Knowledge of Mental Illness, and Personal Adjustment

    Open Access•Lewis R Lieberman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

2 studies were performed to discover correlates of attitudes toward the mentally ill. In Study I, 121 college students in 3 states were given the Opinions about Mental Illness questionnaire (OMI) and a test of knowledge about mental illness devised by Nunnally. Results showed that the students as a group were better informed about mental illness than the general population. Also, those who were less authoritarian toward the mental patient (as ass…

  • Life Satisfaction in the Young and the Old

    Open Access•Lewis R Lieberman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

The Life Satisfaction Index A (LSIA) was administered to a group of 101 elderly persons ( M age — 77.6) and a group of college students ( M age , = 20.1). The mean LSIA score of approximately 12 for both groups indicated no difference in degree of life satisfaction. An analysis of the responses of both groups to each of the 20 items of the LSIA, however, showed significant differences in the sources of satisfaction for each group. The old seemed …

  • Effect of Sex on the Correlation between the Dogmatism Scale and the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule

    Open Access•Dorothy H Swindell, Lewis R Lieberman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

In the present study, based on 99 male and 117 female college students, correlations between dogmatism and the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule variables are different for the two sexes

  • Relation of Photo-Trait-Attribution Method of Personality Assessment to Standard Assessment Techniques

    Open Access•Ralph B Vacchiano, Robert J Adrian et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

The validity of the photo-trait-attribution method of personality assessment was explored by comparison of the attribution task with TAT projective analysis (attribution of need descriptions to TAT hero) and three criterion measures, TAT performance, reputation, and self-description. All measures were based on the same personality constructs, Murray's need system. Although relatively little relationship was exhibited between the criterion measure…

  • Experimenter-Made vs Subject-Made Mnemonics in Paired-Associate Learning

    Open Access•Lewis R Lieberman, William M Walters et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

Two groups of Ss learned 42 pairs of words as a standard paired-associates learning task. One group was provided with mnemonic devices as an aid in learning the pairs and the other group was told to make up their own mnemonic aids. The difference in the number of pairs learned was not significant. Correlation between recall scores and Scholastic Aptitude Test verbal scores approached 0. There was a high correlation between the number of Ss who re…

  • Words versus Objects

    Open Access•Lewis R Lieberman, James T Culpepper•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

Three experiments in free verbal recall compared the learning of common objects with the learning of the words for these objects. In Exp. I (24 male and 26 female Ss), objects were placed on a board, words were on a list. In Exp. II (46 females) and III (62 males), objects (photographs) and words were serially exposed. Groups exposed to objects did better in all experiments
