Federal mental health policymaking
A national study of the knowledge, attitudes and patterns of use of drugs by disadvantaged adolescents
The first nationwide study of the knowledge, attitudes, and patterns of use of drugs by disadvantaged young people is reported. The unanticipated results indicate that this high risk population is poorly informed about, and disapproves of, drugs, and that its drug use is not epidemic. Implications of the findings for drug programs and future research are discussed
The religious functions of psychiatry
Book reviewed in this article: Three functions traditionally recognized as being in the domain of religion are increasingly being assumed by mental health practitioners: 1) explanation of the unknown; 2) ritual and social functions; and 3) the definition of values. The authors recommend that religious and mental health practitioners define their functions and roles more clearly, so that they may interact more constructively
Mental health insurance
A new look at national insurance for mental health
The author suggests that distribution of mental health manpower, underserved consumer needs and potential utilization, and control of quality and effectiveness of mental health service are issues that should be addressed through a national health insurance program. A functional job analysis, public service incentive program, and linkage of insurance benefits to an improved system of mental health delivery, training, and evaluation are proposed
