Use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems for Weight Control Among Sexual and Gender Minority Individuals Who Smoke Cigarettes
Background Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals report higher dual use of cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use than heterosexual individuals. Weight control intentions may contribute to these differences, as SGM individuals experience greater body dissatisfaction and engagement in disordered eating behaviors, which may increase the likelihood of using tobacco/nicotine products for weight control. This study examin…
Smoking Discrimination Moderates the Relationship between Smoking Stigma and Cigarettes Per Day among Sexual and Gender Minority Individuals
Background: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals report rates of tobacco use that range from 19% to 40% compared to roughly 20% of the general population. Higher rates of tobacco use, compounded by stress from discrimination, contribute to lower cessation rates and worse smoking-related outcomes for SGM individuals. Having multiple stigmatized identities, such as identifying as SGM and being a person who uses cigarettes, may further incre…

Effects of liquid nicotine concentration and flavour on the acceptability of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) among people who smoke participating in a randomised controlled trial to reduce…
Both nicotine concentration and flavour appear to have independent, as well as interactive, effects that influence ENDS acceptability among people who use cigarettes
Perceptions of African American Youth and Adults Regarding Tobacco Use-Related Factors in Their Community
Expanded tobacco prevention and cessation resources for B/AA people who smoke could leverage federal regulatory actions to ban tobacco products targeted toward this group and decrease disparities in tobacco-related morbidity and mortality

Trauma exposure and post‐traumatic stress symptoms among Syrian refugee youth in Jordan
This study assessed relations between exposure to trauma and post‐traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms, and whether perceived social support from family and friends and gender moderated these associations. Syrian refugee youth ( N = 418, 55.0% female) attending public schools in Jordan participated. Boys reported more age‐adjusted PTS symptoms than girls. Analyses revealed that family support and gender moderated the association of trauma on PTS sympt…
Perceived Harms of Waterpipe Tobacco Heating Sources Among Young Adult Waterpipe Tobacco Smokers
Background. Waterpipe tobacco smoking is associated with many negative health outcomes due to toxicants produced by heating the tobacco using charcoal or electrical heaters. Little is known about how young adult waterpipe tobacco smokers perceive harms of these heating sources. Aims. To examine young adult waterpipe tobacco smokers’ perceived harms of electrical heaters and charcoal to heat waterpipe tobacco. Method. This online cross-sectional s…
Smoking status and racial/ethnic disparities in youth exposure to tobacco advertising
Tobacco advertising exposure increases tobacco use among youth. Data were from a largely racial and ethnic minority sample (60% non-Hispanic (NH) Black/African American) of youth (13-18 years) who were nonsmokers susceptible to future tobacco use ( n = 686) or current cigarette smokers ( n = 674). Regression models tested associations between tobacco advertisement exposure and smoking status, and determined demographic correlates. Nearly all yout…
Influence of Electronic Cigarette Characteristics on Susceptibility, Perceptions, and Abuse Liability Indices among Combustible Tobacco Cigarette Smokers and Non-Smokers
This study assessed how electronic cigarette (ECIG) characteristics amenable to regulation-namely nicotine content, flavor, and modified risk messages-impact ECIG use susceptibility, harm/addiction perceptions, and abuse liability indices among combustible tobacco cigarette (CTC) smokers and non-smokers. CTC smokers and non-smokers varying in ECIG use recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) completed an online survey in 2016 (analytic n = 70…
What factors reliably predict electronic cigarette nicotine delivery
Puff duration and liquid nicotine concentration may be among the more important factors to consider as regulators attempt to balance e-cigarette safety with efficacy. These findings should be interpreted in the context of devices with relatively low power output, a variable not studied here but likely also directly relevant to product regulation
Answering questions about electronic cigarettes using a multidisciplinary model
Electronic cigarettes (ECIGs) are a relatively new class of tobacco products and a subject of much debate for scientists and policymakers worldwide. Objective data that address the ECIG risk-benefit ratio for individual and public health are needed, and addressing this need requires a multidisciplinary approach that spans several areas of psychology as well as chemistry, toxicant inhalation, and physiology. This multidisciplinary approach would b…
Tobacco Marketing, E-cigarette Susceptibility, and Perceptions among Adults
Increased exposure to tobacco advertising outlets could influence future EC and CC use in non-smokers and perceptions in smokers, while receiving coupons could affect EC and CC susceptibility among non-smokers. Future research is needed to determine whether policies to minimize exposure to tobacco marketing reduce EC use by decreasing susceptibility
A transdisciplinary model to inform randomized clinical trial methods for electronic cigarette evaluation
TRN: NCT02342795 , registered December 16, 2014
Consensus statement on assessment of waterpipe smoking in epidemiological studies
Numerous epidemiological accounts suggest that waterpipe smoking (aka hookah, shisha, narghile) has become a global phenomenon, especially among youth. The alarming spread of waterpipe and accumulating evidence of its addictive and harmful effects represent a new threat in the global fight to limit tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. In response to waterpipe's alarming trends, major public health and tobacco control organisations have starte…
Electronic cigarette use and indoor air quality in a natural setting
PM 2.5 concentrations observed at the ECIG event were higher than concentrations reported previously in hookah cafés and bars that allow cigarette smoking. This study indicates that indoor ECIG use exposes non-users to secondhand ECIG aerosol. Regulatory bodies should consider establishing policies that prohibit ECIG use anywhere combustible cigarette use is prohibited
Forensic analysis of online marketing for electronic nicotine delivery systems
These findings support increased monitoring and regulation of ENDS marketing to prevent deceptive marketing tactics and ensure consumer safety
A Multiple Indicators and Multiple Causes Model of Alternative Tobacco Use
Prevention and cessation programs might reduce adolescent ATP use by targeting specific characteristics of cigarette smoking
Indoor air quality in Virginia waterpipe cafés
The PM2.5 concentrations observed among the waterpipe cafés sampled here indicated air quality in the waterpipe café smoking rooms was worse than restaurant rooms in which cigarette smoking was permitted, and state-required non-smoking rooms in waterpipe cafés may expose patrons and employees to PM2.5 concentrations above national and international air quality standards. Reducing the health risks of secondhand smoke may require smoke-free establi…
Evaluating the acute effects of oral, non-combustible potential reduced exposure products marketed to smokers
While decreased toxicant exposure is a potential indicator of harm reduction potential, a failure to suppress abstinence symptoms suggests that currently marketed non-combustible PREPs may not be a viable harm reduction strategy for US smokers. This study demonstrates how clinical laboratory methods can be used to evaluate the short-term effects of non-combustible PREPs for smokers
