Do therapists vary much in their success? Findings from four outcome studies
Success rates of psychotherapists were compared across each of four treatment outcome studies, with results indicating: considerable difference between therapists in their average success rates; considerable variability in outcome within the caseload of individual therapists; little support for the widely held view that certain therapists are best for certain kinds of patients; and variations in success rate typically have more to do with the the…
Public psychology: An extension of the community idea
Giving Alcohol to Alcoholics; An Evaluation
A group of 14 alcoholic patients received beverage alcohol in progressively reduced amounts for up to 32 days. At a 6-month follow-up the group had fared at least as well, if not better, than a similar group of alcoholics who did not receive the beverage
Temporal Processes in Alcoholism
Comparison of time perception of 20 hospitalized sober alcoholics and 20 controls indicated a constricted and less coherent time perspective among the alcoholics, with a tendency to overestimation, supporting the recommendation that treatment emphasis should avoid long-term planning
Some situational factors associated with response to psychotherapy
This paper is concerned with certain situational factors which appear to influence therapy behavior and outcome of psychoneurotic patients seen in short-term psychiatric clinic treatment. These factors are the patients' expectancies, including their clarity and the extent to which they are congruent with those of the therapists, their suitability for psychotherapy as perceived by independent raters and certain aspects of the therapists' behavior
An interview method for assessing alcoholism
This paper describes the development and application of an interview method for distinguishing alcoholics from nonalcoholics and for determining levels of severity among the former group. Demographic, physical, psychological, family and occupational data provide information for determining interrater reliability and tests of internal consistency
