Explanation and Psychological Mechanisms
Psychological science is facing an explanatory dead-end because it currently offers interpretations rather than scientific explanations without any way to move from mediators to mechanisms. The long-standing promise has always been that future investigators will transform mediators into mechanisms but this promise remains unfulfilled. The missing mechanism information might be discovered by new empirical methods that have yet to be developed, but…
The Personal Identity Test
Individuals' identity formation is generally understood to occur at multiple levels. Extant research distinguishes two levels of personal identity: (a) an external sense of personal identity that is formed by family, school, and community interactions and (b) a core internal sense of personality identity that is generally understood to be formed during infancy and childhood by caregivers. Fundamental to this core sense of self is that it is conti…
Racial Disparities in Sleep
This study investigates the same-day associations between discrimination and sleep among 350 adolescents ages 13–15 (M = 14.29, SD = 0.65; Asian = 41%, Black = 22%, Latinx = 37%). Assessing sleep duration, sleep onset latency, and wake minutes after sleep onset using wrist actigraphy, Black adolescents slept 35 min less than Asian and 36 min less than Latinx youth. Black adolescents suffered the most wake minutes after sleep onset, followed by La…
Theory construction and data analysis
Data analysis should be neutral relative to theory construction in order to be unbiased. Data analysis should not strongly favor one form of theory construction over others. Traditional approaches to theory construction prioritize simplicity of explanation based on parsimony using a few prominent statistically significant variables. Alternative web of causation explanations prioritize comprehensive explanations based on complexity using many smal…
Basing clinical practice on unified psychological science
The article by Melchert (2016) called for professional psychology to leave its preparadigmatic past behind and move forward based upon a single unified theoretical orientation. Although leaving the preparadigmatic past behind is important, the claim that psychology has recently transitioned to a unified paradigmatic science based on a unified theoretical orientation seems premature at this time. However, the prospect of progress toward a unified …

Monitoring and Assessing Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome's principal symptoms are severe and include prolonged fatigue and a number of other minor symptoms. Behavioral data collection methods were used in a case study to show some of the benefits that can be derived from monitoring symptoms hourly and daily. Using time series regression, several statistically significant correlates of fatigue were found both within days and between days. Perceived energy, physical exertion, and…
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a baffling disease potentially affecting millions of Americans. Self-rating scales were developed to assess this condition but have yet to be validated with objective measures of activity. The present study of a 45-yr.-old man evaluated the relationships between scores on self-rating scales used to measure Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and actigraphy. Measured activity was related to predictors of fatigue but not to fatigue…
