Survey of the Nature and Prevalence of Patients' Noncompliance and Implications for Intervention
The problem of patients' noncompliance is discussed, noting possible biases in estimates of prevalence (18 to 82%) which may overestimate compliance rates and frequent failure to define conditions constituting compliance. This survey obtained information on the nature and incidence of noncompliance from a "healthy," Census-based, sample (n = 148), age 20 to 79 years. Data were examined to identify relationships among variables in compliance and d…
Attentional Performance, Gender and an Index of Excitability
Introversion-extraversion and gender effects on attention were investigated. Eysenck's theory, based on excitability, underlying the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire suggests introverts performing better than extraverts on tasks of time to first identification and number identified in an attentional task (discerning differences between two similar cartoons). Based on 45 college students, gender-specific analysis showed increasing extraversion in…
Patients' Compliance
The problem of patients' noncompliance with prescribed medications is discussed, to include prevalence and suspected variables of influence. This article seeks to sensitize psychological researchers to the problem, cites research on nonspecific drug factors which could affect noncompliance, and suggests directions for needed research efforts. Variables suggested for study include perceptual qualities of medications and associated expectations and…
Small Institutions of Higher Education and Sponsored Programs
This paper contains a review of literature on efforts at small institutions to pursue sponsored programs and of related resources, efforts, and attitudes of 175 such schools from which 47 responses were received. Few relevant articles were found. Responses to a mail survey were from independent (51%), church-affiliated (45%), and state-supported (4%) schools, at which average undergraduate enrollment was 574, with a mean of 39 full-time and 22 pa…
The Study of Values
Curriculum Needs
The desirability of informing and developing psychology majors beyond the traditional academic curriculum was noted, with a perspective on life preparation. The content and conduct of a senior level psychology seminar for undergraduate majors was introduced. Suggested topics included career opportunities in psychology, alternative careers, graduate training, personal and fiscal development and management, resumes and correspondence, ethics, and p…
Nonspecific Factors in Drug Effects
The importance of the concept of placebo in medicine and psychology historically and in practice was noted, including attitudes and ethical concerns. This paper reviewed evidence relating to personality correlates of responsivity to placebos. It was concluded that a trait model of responsivity to placebos was largely unsubstantiated and suggested that other nonspecific factors of drug effects may be more influential in reactions to placebos. Eval…
Relationship of Perceptual Characteristics to Efficacy of Placebos
The placebo was acknowledged as a potent agent associated with a myriad of psychological, therapeutic, and behavioral effects. Given the widespread use and efficacy of placebos, major needs relative to more accurate conceptualization, appreciation, and effective use of properties were discussed. Emphasis was placed on considerations of the placebo as a complex stimulus. The physical and perceptual characteristics of placebos were reviewed in rega…

A Descriptive Study of Denominational Concomitants in Psychiatric Diagnosis
Psychology is increasingly stressing the institutional bases of behavior. Religion, as one such base, was noted in early Freudian thought, and recent concern has been placed on discerning relationships between religious involvement and personality characteristics. Specific attention was focused on relating church membership to incidence and nature of mental disorder. Citing problems of earlier research, the purpose of this study was to determine …
Problems in Use of Rodents for Studies of Maternal Exposure to Alcohol
Supporting the re-emergence of interest in consequences to offspring involved with maternal alcohol consumption, a warning of potential confounding in studies was sounded. Reduced litter size and maternal destruction of offspring in rodents were noted to typify such studies. Use of surviving alcohol-exposed offspring may produce artifactual effects
