  • The adaptive value of tool‐aided defense against wild animal attacks

    Open Access•Peter B Crabb, Andrew Elizaga•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2008•References: 11

Throughout history humans have faced the persistent threat of attacks by wild animals, and how humans respond to this problem can make the difference between survival and death. In theory, the use of tools to fend off animal attacks would be more effective than resisting bare‐handed, yet evidence for the advantage of tool‐aided defense is scarce and equivocal. Two studies of news accounts of wild animal attacks against humans were conducted to te…

  • Technology and Self-Regulation

    Open Access•Peter B Crabb•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2003

A study of 417 undergraduate students examined a hypothesized correlation between use of alarm clocks to awaken and self-regulatory skills. As predicted, use of awakening aids (alarm clocks, household members) was negatively correlated with self-regulation measures, while self-awakening was positively correlated with self-regulation. Also as predicted, alarm clock use had larger negative correlations with self-regulation than did being awakened b…

  • The material culture of homicidal fantasies

    Open Access•Peter B Crabb•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2000

A descriptive study was conducted of normal undergraduate students' impulsive homicidal thoughts and the weapons used in these fantasies. Participants completed a questionnaire asking them to describe a recent incident in which they thought about killing someone. A significant proportion of participants reported having homicidal fantasies. Most fantasies were elicited by frustrating or threatening interpersonal events and involved material-cultur…

  • When aggression seems justified

    Open Access•Peter B Crabb•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1989•References: 7

This research delineates several factors that may affect how likely observers are to view intergroup aggression as justified. Subjects who favored one side or the other, as well as nominally neutral subjects, rated fictional scenarios depicting an aggressive action by either Israeli or Palestinian armed forces. As hypothesized, rated justification varied with the interaction of an observer's perspective and the relative power of the aggressor and…

  • What is aggressive? some contextual factors in judging international behavior

    Open Access•Peter B Crabb, Ralph L Rosnow•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1988•References: 8

This research delineates several factors that may affect how likely observers are to judge some international actions as aggressive. Subjects rated scenarios in which a country intercedes in the affairs of another country experiencing internal or external difficulties. Judged to be more aggressive, as hypothesized, were actions in which it was “they” rather than “we” who were responsible, actions capable of causing injury or death, and actions ca…
