Notes on Problems of “Validity Generalization” and Situational Specificity
This note provides additional research findings, using the Tiffany Control Scales, to re-emphasize that behavior typically changes when situations change. These and other findings reiterate the fact that many psychological tests should reflect situational differences and their effect on behavioral variance
Overgeneralization of Validity Generalization in Personality Inventories
Generalization of validity asserts that a predictor or criterion generalizes across studies and will continue to show similar parameters when the situation changes. Kurt Lewin explored situation-behavior relationships, and Mischel examined the situation-behavior association showing predictive accuracy between behaviors and contexts. Contextual Effects on Adolescent Disorders Relevant to Coping
A four-factor control model was used to test the contextual determinants in adolescents' sense of control on a coping scale. Outpatients, matched for age and gender, completed the Tiffany Control Scales. Analyses confirmed the hypotheses that 52 who scored as externalizing compared to those 40 scoring as internalizing showed greater coping in response to different contextual determinants defined as situations

Analysis suggests that the amount of control perceived by subjects is validated by their living accommodations. Further support is given to these findings by the comparison of control sc…
