    Mark A Burkholder•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2006

In 1445, John II of Castile awarded a sizeable estate southwest of Toledo to Gutierre de Sotomayor, a favored noble supporter. The land and its jurisdiction, however, were not taken from royal lands or following due process; rather, they belonged to the city of Toledo as a result of purchase from an earlier monarch. The city’s council consequently protested the grant and initiated a lawsuit for the return of its property. At stake was an issue ce…

The result was a legacy of underdevelopment, domestic social inequities, and economic subordination to the North Atlantic world. This volume examines how Spanish colonial policies contributed to profound socioeconomic changes, leading to patterns of underdev…

Jacques A Barbier, Jacques Barbier et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1982

The study of Spanish America's Bourbon reforms has flowered in the last quarter century, yet the field remains underdeveloped. Despite the outpouring of monographs, the historiography lacks many basic reference tools. Spotty coverage of Spain tends to obscure the context of reform; and, when examined regionally, the literature is so uneven as to make intercolonial comparisons extremely difficult.
