  • Some Fundamental Problems in Experimental Psychology

    Open Access•A C Pereboom•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

The application of the experimental approach to a multidimensional discipline presupposes that it will work, that control and analysis will generate explanations which will lead to a unified theory for a restricted behavior domain, and that there will be a fundamental basis for our concepts, scales, and methods which will justify the measurable generalization of that theory. Yet little of this appears to be happening. It is suggested that, in the…

  • Systematic-Representative Study of Spontaneous Activity in the Rat

    Open Access•A C Pereboom•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

Spontaneous activity in the rat over a continuous 47-hr. period was investigated as a function of age, sex, food-water deprivation, illumination level, starting time, temperature, and experimental environment. A one-half replication ( N = 192) of a complete factorial design was used. The results were in essential agreement with earlier work, with activity greatest for young, cool, high-deprivation Ss run in the activity wheel. on the basis of the…

  • Three Paragraphs on Avoidance Extinction

    Open Access•A C Pereboom•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1964

Perhaps psycholog~cts occasionally forget, as the data continue to accumulate, how simply an expectancy theory can approach a problem that may be very resistant to a reinforcement viewpoint (Ritchie, 1951; Solomon & Wynne, 1954). The following thumbnail sketch might serve as a useful reminder. In reward training and its extinction, S commonly experiences a sequence of stimulus changes terminated by an appropriate incentive; he then experiences th…
