  • A New Rule of Inference for an Epistemic Logic Applied to Cognitive Psychology

    Open Access•Lawrence La Fave, Steven Shew•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

Though psychology's only hope of ever becoming a science resides in a phenomenological approach, no mathematical logic presently exists for formalizing adequately a comprehensive cognitive psychology. Such a needed epistemic logic would lose some rules of inference which positivistic, nonepistemic mathematical logics employ. Therefore, if this needed new logic is to provide sufficient deductive power, new rules of inference would be required. The…

  • Reduction of Conflict to One Type

    Open Access•Lawrence La Fave•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

A logical analysis of psychological conflict suggests that, when pseudo instances of conflict are discounted, the four types of conflict commonly assumed reduce to one. The only genuine type is n-degree conflict. The various consistency theories (balance, dissonance, congruity, et al.) each assume only one type of inconsistency. But, since inconsistency includes conflict, so consistency theories implicitly assume only one type of conflict

  • The Holism-Atomism Controversy: Gestalt Psychology Confronts the Revised Law of Inverse Variation

    Open Access•Lawrence La Fave•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Gestalt psychology is rightly associated with an holistic point of view which may be paraphrased: ‘The whole is equal to something besides the sum of its parts.’ But much of the attractiveness of that statement inheres in its exceeding ambiguity; the words whole, is, besides, sum, and parts each have several meanings (although the context which the sentence provides eliminates some of these). One of the plausible interpretations of the sentence i…
