  • Single-Sex Public Schools for Boys

    Open Access•Leonard Sax•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2024

The efficacy of single-sex education for boys has been a focus of scholarly inquiry for decades. The consensus has been that the all-boys format does not boost academic achievement for boys, on average. In this article, I suggest that the scholarly consensus may be mistaken or at least misleading. I argue that while some boys’ schools are successful and others are not, the all-boys format creates opportunities to educate differently. But when tea…

  • What was the Cause of Nietzsche's Dementia?

    Open Access•Leonard Sax•ARTICLE•Journal of Medical Biography•2003

Many scholars have argued that Nietzsche's dementia was caused by syphilis. A careful review of the evidence suggests that this consensus is probably incorrect. The syphilis hypothesis is not compatible with most of the evidence available. Other hypotheses — such as slowly growing right-sided retro-orbital meningioma — provide a more plausible fit to the evidence.

  • How common is lntersex? A response to Anne Fausto‐Sterling

Leonard Sax•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2002

Anne Fausto-Sterling s suggestion that the prevalence of intersex might be as high as 1.7% has attracted wide attention in both the scholarly press and the popular media. Many reviewers are not aware that this figure includes conditions which most clinicians do not recognize as intersex, such as Klinefelter syndrome, Turner syndrome, and late-onset adrenal hyperplasia. If the term intersex is to retain any meaning, the term should be restricted t…

  • Reclaiming kindergarten

    Leonard Sax•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The kindergarten curriculum has undergone fundamental change over the past 50 years. The shift in curriculum in favor of reading preparedness has had the effect of emphasizing boys ' weak-nesses and girls ' strengths. Two changes are proposed. First, alternative kindergartens empha-sizing group activities and nonverbal skills must be established. Second, boys must be encouraged to enter such a kindergarten when they turn 5 years old. After 1 year…
